Black Screen w/Installation

I am trying to do an upgrade with a computer I previously had Vista Ultimate on. I choose to do a clean install and formatted the hard drive with the 7 installer. The installation begins normally, but when it reboots and says "Starting Windows" a black screen comes up. I am able to see the mouse cursor and mode it, but nothing else occurs. The hard drive light comes on periodically, but nothing happens even if I leave it sitting for several hours. If I restart the computer, it gives me the option to start in safe mode, then says 7 can not load in safe mode and reboots to the same black screen.

I have tried installing multiple times with the same result. I re-loaded Vista and tried to do an upgrade, but it tells me Vista Ultimate can not be upgraded to 7 Home Premium and I must do a clean install.

The upgrade advisor told me I should have no issues and Vista ran fine.

Any ideas what could be causing this black screen upon installation?

I've tried it both ways. I started out booting from the disc and trying a clean install. After that failed, I re-loaded Vista and tried to upgrade from within windows, but it would not allow an upgrade from Vista Premium to Windows 7 Home premium.

It sounds like it didnt load some of the drivers on the clean install(happened me earlier in a different way)

Try full clean reinstall and then run start-up repair from the installation disc a few times (3-4) and then let it boot into the OS.

Is your computer under warranty? Call tech support to see if there are possible Windows 7 issues with that model.

If you bought your MS retail, you purchased tech support from MS. The number is on the disk.

Try booting into the installer and select Repair console, see if it finds an installation to fix and, if so, run Startup Repair. If it restarts and fails to boot, try again.

If Vista can install, Win7 should also. But just to be sure, I would check the manufacturer's product support page for any BIOS revisions to see if there is a more recent one than you have. Hopefully, their tech support can help you with this.

Well it turns out that Windows 7 was loading onto the other display of my dual monitor. The other monitor is normally used as a tv and not set to display the desktop. Windows was making that the primary display and just showing a black screen on the second monitor. That is why the mouse cursor was there. Once I switched the tv back to monitor mode, I was able to complete installation without issue. Thanks to everyone that gave suggestions.
