can't access saved fils from easy transfer - after vista to windows 7

I was running windows vista home premium and decided to upgrade to windows 7
I did the easy transfer option and selected my external hard drive as they place to save the process.
The upgrade has been completed and have gone into the hard drive to re-install everything and it says the following when I try to select my hard drive as the destination for the files:select valid file
It doesn't show anything else in the hard drive except for easy transfer...all stuff that was stored on the before is not showing...
    freaking out
any one have ideas? - would be hugelyyyyy appreciated!!!!!

This is why we don't recommend Easy Transfer had you asked, as its too easy to lose data and reimports AppData settings which are a corruption path into a fresh install.

Data should always be backed up against HD failure so if you have a data backup copy that into your User folders which is the best way to back up data, dragging the active User folders to storage. If you have a backup image we can help you mount it to copy out the data. Otherwise data recovery usually doesn't work if the old OS has already been formatted over.

Another free method which also syncs your data at the same time and stores it to the cloud is Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums.

I right clicked on the easy transfer icon in the hard drive and I clicked on adobe bridge help and I can see that there is some stuff in there but I can't open any of them...do you know how?

I have no idea what Adobe Bridge Help is or how it would help you see stranded WET files, but at least it seems you found them.

You can try running WET on another PC which may be more amenable. Then at least you'd have your files. See of you can prevent anything other than your User folder files being imported - as stated AppData settings are a corruption path and should never be reimported or it defeats a Clean Install and would probably overwrite a rescue PC's settings.

If the files are not encrypted there is this tool which is said to extract them from the .mig archive files: MigRecover Utility for Microsoft’s Windows Easy Transfer | Visser Labs
