Win7 x64 installation on new hdd issue on HP dv7

    Hello,

I have a HP dv7-4073nr and it recently crashed. I ran the hard drive tests through BIOS and saw that my hard drive failed the short DST test. So i bought a new hard drive (identical to the one that failed).

After installing the new hard drive i placed a copy of Win 7 home prem. x64 onto my USB to install onto the new hard drive. I get to the "Where do you want to install WIndows?" screen and I am uable to install the OS on the hard drive.

I got the error "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

So I try to see what I can do in the BIOS... i restored the settings to default. When I try to take a look at the hard drive, I get the "3F0" error (boot device not found/hard disk not found).

I am quite confused because when I try to install Windows it shows the "Disk 0 Unallocated Space" and I can run diskpart to take a look at it too but I am still unable to install. I have tried looking at the dv7-4073nr drivers but it does not help.

Does anyone know what is wrong? I am not sure how to test if the HDD is DOA.

    Thanks

What do you see in Diskpart?

Have you attempted to create partitions or format in Diskpart?

    When i list the disks:

    DIsk 0 | Online | 596 GB | 596 GB | |

when I create partition primary it states that it succeeded and I am trying to format to ntfs.

I tried it once before and it did not do much but I am currently trying again.

    Try these commands:

list disk (to show the ID number of the hard disk to partition, normally Disk 0)

select disk 0 (change 0 to another number if applicable)

clean (this wipes the drive of anything on it; not needed on a brand new drive)

create partition primary (this will create one primary partition covering the entire drive; if you instead want to create a primary partition of 80 GB, add “size=80000” after the word “primary”)

select partition 1 (this selects the partition you just made)

active (this marks that partition active)

format fs=ntfs quick (this formats that partition)

exit (this quits the diskpart program)

exit (this closes the command prompt window)

Continue Windows 7 installation as usual. Remember to highlight and select the partition just created when you come to the partition screen asking you "where do you want to install Windows?”.

Will try that right after it finishes formating.

If those fail then work through the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums which resolve 90% of installation failures.

If this does not overcome the error you're getting test the HD with the maker's diagnostics extended CD scan from the Troubleshooting steps in my signature picture below. Then run a full Disk Check from Command line on a full Disk partition you format using Diskpart.

yea.. those disk part commands did not work.. I got the same error.

Going through the troubleshooting guide i run into some issues:

step two has me setting the SATA controller to AHCI... i am not sure how to get this done. I do not see this anywhere in the BIOS.

I also do not see any UEFI boot choices in my BIOS.

Ok just reset to default then. Set HDD first to boot. Trigger installer from BIOS Boot menu.

If Diskpart can then not be made to run try another installer. Then try another HDD or test that one.

I am checking the new hdd with the checker currently "long test". IF that doesnt work i will burn a different ISO to my USB to try that.

    Which test maker exactly?

    Bootable or from OS?
