i have a new hard drive & I'm trying to install win 7 x64, however my motherboard was too old for SATA-600 devices and wouldn't recognise the HDD, I flashed the BIOS to see if this would correct the problem, but to no avail.
So does this mean the HDD is still unrecognized? You need a disk to install Windows.
yes, the new sata-600 drive is still unrecognised, so i've reverted back to a sata-300 which the motherboard sees alright.

    You're welcome Drew.

Members still need more information on the new SATA III HD (make and complete model #)

The SATA III (6 Gb/s) drive should work on the SATA II (3 Gb/s) ports on your Mobo - SATA is backward compatible (thanks for poking me on that Ken - the meds after dental work make thinking a little slow)

Here's what I would do if it were my machine.
    1. Backup my personal data
    2. Reset BIOS to defaults
    3. Use the 320 GB drive as boot
    4. Install Windows following this Tutorial:
      Clean Install Windows 7
Create new install media per the tut
Special case USB Flash & UEFI install
    5. Once Windows 7 is up-to-date (all Windows Update offers have been downloaded and installed), then figure out the new drive.
    6. Use the new drive for data.
A mechanical drive isn't going to achieve the 6 Gb/s or the 3Gb/s xfer rate, so it doesn't matter if you put the OS on the faster capable drive. Remember it's Giga bits, not Giga Bytes - plus there's some overhead involved.
See: Sata 6Gb/s HDD at sata 3Gb/s speeds - Hard Drives - Storage
      and
      SATA 6 Gb/s - Hard Drives - Storage

This strategy allows you to put your data on the second drive and move it to a new machine in the future.

    Your strategy might be different.

This happened to me, and I was using an older motherboard. It took it awhile for the dialogue box to show up. Try waiting for like 10 to 20 minutes and see what happens.
This worked, but everything is cripplingly slow.

Slartybartfast, clean install is running right now, the drive's just been formatted but It's so slow now. Sorry i dont have the make and model of the HDD, forgot to look at it while i was down with the machine :Z.

I'll post when the super-slow install is completed.

That's fine Drew, a Clean install might solve all of your woes anyway.

There is one thing you should check when you're through the install process (before going through the WU cycle)

Open Disk Management and check that only the System partition is Active (it could be your boot part, depending on how you install, but normally the Active part is the 100 MB System reserve (might be 200 MB - again it depends.)

Please post information about your drives after the install is completed.

Ken, you're saying that the SATA III (6 Gb/s) HD should work on the SATA II (3 Gb/s) ports, albeit at a slower xfer rate? That would make sense.

You won't even get the SATA II (3 Gb/s) rate though, unless it's an SSD

That's correct. SATAII devices will run on SATAIII ports and vise-versa.

    Seagate 500GB Barracuda SATA-600 7200RPM 16MB 3.5" Hard Drive

This is the hard drive that it wont recognise.

Don't know if it will help or not but can you post the model number of the drive?

Reference manuals (PDF files) - if I got the correct model

Your board has 6 SATA ports (is JMicron involved?), you could try another port - make sure the connector snaps into place.

That's enough to chew on for now - post your results, thanks.

See the attached PDF (pg 1-25 of the manual)
Read the notes at the bottom of the page re: ports 5 & 6 and ports 1-4
There's also a notation on RAID. You might not want RAID, but the notation might apply in your case.
