Can't install windows 7, no dialogue box appears after booting from CD

Hello, I'm wondering if someone could help me out,

i have a new hard drive & I'm trying to install win 7 x64, however my motherboard was too old for SATA-600 devices and wouldn't recognise the HDD, I flashed the BIOS to see if this would correct the problem, but to no avail.

Now when i try to install windows, it'll boot from the cd fine, loads the installation files, then comes to a windows background with a cursor but the dialogue box wont appear.

I'm stumped right now, it used to have a dialogue box in the install, it's just after flashing the BIOS it wont work.

So does this mean the HDD is still unrecognized? You need a disk to install Windows.

Here's the Asus download page, BIOS is not OS dependent (the utilities are though)
Motherboards - M4N72-E - ASUS

But BIOS won't change hardware.

I checked the manual on that board and it does support SATA drives. Try clearing CMOS memory then see if you can get into the BIOS. Check to see what disk settings are stored. You might also check to see if there is an opton in the BIOS to "reset to default". Then try to install the OS.

This happened to me, and I was using an older motherboard. It took it awhile for the dialogue box to show up. Try waiting for like 10 to 20 minutes and see what happens.

I couldn't find the user manual (didn't look that hard though) and I didn't look at the install manual.

Ken, you're saying that the SATA III (6 Gb/s) HD should work on the SATA II (3 Gb/s) ports, albeit at a slower xfer rate?
That would make sense.

You won't even get the SATA II (3 Gb/s) rate though, unless it's an SSD

I think we need to back up and get more information

What is the brand and model of the new HDD?
Are you trying to install Windows on the 320 GB drive or the new drive?
What drive(s) are in the machine now?
What BIOS did you install and where did it come from?

I'll wait for drewshki to help us help him before posting again.

Right now i'm running with a 320GB SATA-300 drive which I've used for years & works fine. The HDD doesn't seem to matter though, with either drive in, or no drive, I have the same issue now with the windows installer. I can install XP fine though :Z

The windows installer works just fine from either of my win 7 discs once i boot into XP, but i cant upgrade to win 7 from xp without booting from the disc.

The BIOS came from the ASUS website, correct one for my motherboard [M4N72-E].

I just remembered one last thing, after i flashed the BIOS I noticed on the ASUS splash screen I had the option to turn on ACC and unlock the extra cores on my cpu. I enabled that, will post back after & see how disabling this works.

Thank you for taking the time to help out.
