Is there an alternative? I don't know why my install was rejected - did I need a higher level of Vista? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if I can't upgrade without a clean install, Windows 7 is of no use to me. I'm thinking that Best Buy will not take it back because you can't return software there - is that true?
Hi and welcome
There are several things going on here. First I assume you have the Win 7
Pro upgrade disk. That you are trying to upgrade 32bit ti 32 bit, or 64bit to 64bit.
Upgrades are done within versions Ie vista home>win 7 home. Vista ultimate>win 7 ultimate. there are descrtions of the various paths here

You cant go from vista home>win 7 pro.
Hope this helps a bit
