    Help deleting an Old Copy of Win7


    I need help deleting a copy of Win7 Professional from what is now my E Drive. When I try and delete that copy, it tells me I need to be to be an administrator and will not proceed.
    • I upgraded my son's system from an IDE drive to an Intel SSD. I unhooked the old IDE and did a fresh install of Win 7 Home Premium, with updates, on the SSD with no issues.
    • I then plugged in the old drive, deleted the Windows.Old and then tried to delete the Windows directory with no luck (Win7 Professional).
    • I went into command prompt and set the properties to administrator with no luck.
    • I used explorer, went into the folder and again set the properties to administrator with no luck.
    • I then set the "User" as administrator an gave full control to the "User" with no luck.
    I'm out of ideas folks. I know there must be something super easy I'm missing but for the life of me I don't know what it could be. Can anyone instruct me on how to get rid of this folder? TIA.

    If you unplugged the IDE drive during install you should have no boot issues. Make sure it is not marked System or Active in Disk Mgmt.

    Backup your files and wipe the IDE HD then create and format new NTFS partition(s): Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
    Partition or Volume - Create New

    If you don't want to wipe the HD for some reason, bring the disk and then partition into focus with Diskpart to run Delete Partition Override command.

    If you can't move the data off, take ownership of the Windows folder then try to delete it: Take Ownership Shortcut

    Pics added to original post. I can add more (or the right ones) if needed.

    I did try Take Owenership and it successfully changed the permissions, but it still will not allow me to delete the folder with the Win7 files. I think I'll just move what I want and reformat.

    Best to wipe the HD of all code if you're going to the trouble, since formatting erases nothing.

    If you only want to format, you'll have to use Diskpart first anyway to Delete Partition Override.

    Rename old win file to Windows.old and do a disk clean up.
