    Non-Consistent Installation Freezing

    Guys,

If you can help me... will love you forever

    Background
    ------------
    • Used to run Windows XP
    • Decided time for upgrade to Win 7
    • Tried to install as per normal installation procedures
    Problem
    -------
    At Expanding Files
    • Various PC Freezes
    • Soometime 0%, 1%, 5%, 28%, anything I have had in that range
    • Twice only has it reached 98% and froze but even leaving the PC running overnight it does not complete.
    • I have since tried a new DVD Drive and now a Brand New Hard Drive but still to no avail

    Solution???
    -----------

Well hoping you guys can help, have attatched the CPU-Z text document in the hope it might shed some light into anything I have missed.

    Many Thanks in Advance

    -Milli

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

Good job on the system specs.

We have made a list of questions that will help us to give you better suggestions, and some hints.
Questions to use for help with Installation Issues
If you can answer as much as possible, we can give informed suggestions rather than guesses.

Are you using a MS DVD or did you down load the ISO file?

We have seen a lot of errors from burning to DVD.

    milli,

I see you have 2 Kingston ram sticks & 1 un-named stick in the CPU-Z file.

Could be mis-matched ram for First Win7 install.

Have you tried install with just the 2 x 1gb Kingston sticks & dis-connect any extra not needed peripherals for the initial install ?

Try the following...Remove all but one stick of RAM... Remove all peripherals that are not absolutely necessary ... drives, usb devices, . Reburn the ISO file at the slowest possible speed ... Post your results....

It's much easier and faster if we have an idea of the steps you've done so far.

We've got most of your hardware, good job on the system specs, we would like to know some details about how you have ran your installation.
We can give much better suggestions if you can answer the questions on the Installation & Setup forum sticky thread.
Questions to use for help with Installation Issues

Do you have a single OS on your computer, are you planning on multi-booting with this installation?
You said you had XP, your system specs say Vista 32bit, are you dual booting now?
What version of Win7 are you installing? 32bit or 64bit? Full retail or Upgrade?

How many internal hard drives (HD) are connected to your system?
    Are they IDE or SATA?

How are you using the ISO, burn a DVD? USB memory key? Extract files and run from a non-target partition?
If DVD what speed did you burn at?

Have you run tests on your RAM or HD?

There are more critical questions on the link provided above.
Once we have some information we can provide helpful suggestions.

    Milli,

I think the first step, as others have suggested, is to eliminate anything from the PC that is not required for install.

I was having the same problem, and here is what worked for me:

Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse (if you have or can borrow a ps2 keyboard and mouse that would be better than using usb).

Leave only he minimum ram in the machine (1gb is usually ok) and remove any other sticks.

Turn off any on-board devices, like USB controller, LAN and sound. If you have on board video, you can leave it on and disconnect any video cards you have.

If you see an option for 'native' mode in your bios, under the sata or storage option, turn it onto native.

At the setup part, use the 'drive options' to delete all partitions on the hard drive. Next, create a new partition and format it (still within the windows 7 setup). The setup should create a new partition with another 100mb partition for system files.

Next, have if you have a sata driver on a CD: Insert the driver cd, click load driver and point it to the sata driver. It should take a few moments to load the driver, after that, click next to go back to the setup screen that shows the partitions.

Put the WIN7 cd back in the drive and click next.

    Good luck.

Guys many thanks for all your advice, really appreciated.

    Current Operating System, pre-install
    • Was Running XP 32, but new hard drive - clean install was wanted
•Not currently or intending to multi-boot
    Current Hardware
    • How many internal hard drives (HD) are connected to your system?
    • I have now 1Tb SATA HD
    • How many DVD drives are connected to your system?
    • 1 SATA DVD RW
    • Any external HDs used?
•1 USB External, but never connected when installing
    • Is this a New Clean HD?
•Was Brand New HD, and formatted before install

The procedure and speed of burning the ISO to DVD has been the most frequent cause of installation failure
    • Used Alcohol 120%
    •Burned at multiple different speeds from 2x -> 8x
    Other
•All Ram, CPU and GPU are as standard and not overclocked

Currently have re-installed Vista 64 bit, and is stable after over a week of trying and failing at Win 7, I needed the Computer back running. Its now a case of trying to fathom out WHY it doesn't install
