How do I upgrade my windows 7 to sp1 with DVD

    Hi all,

I am currently using Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I need to upgrade to sp1. I have a Windows 7 SP1 all in one DVD. How can I use that dvd to install SP1 without formatting my drive?

I have tried upgrade rather than custom option on the installation. But it says that upgrade process needs windows 7 sp1 installed. What a joke..

It is a great limitation for me that I cannot download heavy files right now. Because my internet bandwidth is limited about 4 GB. So if I need to download service pack, please give me a link where I can get x64 sp1 in 500 or 600 mb. I'm sure that SP1 update is available in really short file sizes.

    Thanks in advance
    Sohan

You don`t use the DVD, you run all rounds of windows update, one of the updates will be Service Pack 1.

You should have had SP1 installed a long time ago.

    Just keep running windows update.

I don't want to use automatic windows update. I want a manual download and install so that I can keep the file to use in future. Can anyone link me to a update file with is nearly 500MB or 600MB ?

You can`t download it in sections.

Why do you want to save it for future use, if you just install windows with SP1 included, it`s already done.

Why are you working backwards ?

I see some updates are available Here. But they are too heavy. Can anyone suggest me that which one of it is the main file which updates windows service pack?

For some reason I can't use sp1. But I need it for some other reasons too. So I want to keep it optional so that I can use it only when I need. Hope that makes sense.

What do you mean you can`t use it ?

Did you read the link I posted ? Apparently you can get SP1 off the dvd.

I have some software which make problems with sp1 and doesn't work perfectly. But now I need sp1 to run something. So I don't want to make sp1 permanent.

Look, you don't even have Windows 7 if you don't have SP1. And we don't play games here where we pretend Updates can be ignored. There are so many vital Security and Performance patches which one absolutely must have that it isn't worth picking and choosing because you'll miss one and some program will not install or run correctly, or you'll have other issues.

So set Updates to Automatic, enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3),
then Check for Updates, install all Important and Optional Updates no matter how long it takes. If you want to do them in smaller groups, fine. But when prompted for restart, go back afterwards and Check for Updates until there are no more left to install. Then leave set to Automatic.

We're not negotiating about this. You asked for our help and we positively know what is required here. It's not just the Best Practice - it's the ONLY practice if you want Win7. Until then you don't even have Win7. You have a crap sandwich.

I don't know why you guis don't understand my problem. I don't need sp1 permanently. I just have to install a software, do a little work and then I have to uninstall sp1. So there's no reason I have to do other updates. And as I told before, My internet is limited for download and upload. I currently can use only 2 or 2.5 GB of internet. So I can't just waste it all by windows update. I have other works to do on internet. So I just wanted to know if there is any way where can I download only the hotfix that will give me sp1 after installation. When my work is done, I'm going to uninstall sp1 and get back to normal windows 7 without service pack. You guis are going away from the point.
