Any way to do a "test" install?

I just put a PC together. I chose rather low end performance specs not only to keep price down but I intended to run Linux on it. Things did not work out with Linux due to my inexperience with computer languages.
So, I bought W7 home premium OEM to install. My question is, is there a way to install the OS and get all the updates to bring it up to date, test the performance of the system, and if it is not powerful enough for my intended usage still be able to use the W7 OS on something else? Or, will the W7 OS be tied to the motherboard in the "test" PC?
I hope I was able to convey my question properly, and thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

See step 14 on this tutorial, it shows you how you can skip the product key and automatic activation when installing Windows. You have then 30 days time, a so called grace period to give the product key and activate your Windows.

Thank you Kari, will this allow W7 to gather all the current updates and bring it to latest specs? I thought updates were denied until some sort of check was done with MS.

No, during this grace period Windows is valid and passes all validity checks. All components of Windows, including updates work normally.
