If I cant get it to recover onto the brand new out of the box HD then how can i use a diagnostic disk to check the hard drive?

The maker's diagnostics run on blank HD's too, to confirm its condition.

But since its new I'd first work through the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums.

Drivers prompt almost always means bad installation media. Try a fresh one provided.

Don't worry Jacqui, just get some rest and come back to it when you are ready to tackle it. This isn't work any of us should be doing when we're tired or frustrated.

Once you're ready then click this blue link to start on the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums.

If there are any steps you don't understand, even all of them, feel free to ask back until you can perform each step and let us know what happens.

You had mentioned that you got a request for drivers, which often means that the installation media is bad. But it could be that the disk you have is dirty or scratched so make sure its clean and unscratched or wipe it gently with a soft clean wet cloth. If that error does not go away we can help you download Win7 and burn it to disk.

Let us know how this goes. We are here to help you, every step of the way if necessary.
