Lenovo K450, 7 Pro x64 Install (didn't format), 800B0100

Bought a brand new Lenovo K450 that came with Windows 8. I installed Windows 7 Pro (64) on it end of August. Friend came into town a couple days after that, downloaded fourteen tool bars and more viruses than I can care to count. I did a relatively good job of cleaning it, but keep getting (kept) virus alerts. My system is running slow. Very slow. I've run AVG and AdAware as well as Malwarebytes... I even ran HiJack this but it's been so long, I couldn't remember what was good and what was bad. The log file was VERY long so I just figured... it's time to reinstall windows.

I dont have an install disk from Lenovo. It was a factory refurb with the partition containing all the drivers and Windows 8 (which we all hate). I had to download the individual drivers from Lenovo and install them when I did a fresh install... it was a PITA, but the system is 'running'.

Here's the TLDR summation:

Getting 800B0100 error when trying to install 976932... it's the 8mb SP1 update that others have had issues with. My system does NOT have SP1 installed - I know this because its not listed for one and two, trying to install IE11, gives me the dreaded 'you need SP1' error message.

So what have I done?

Disabled AVG for the time being (its the only thing installed besides Dropbox desktop client).
I've run OldTimers temp file delete tool
Downloaded the Hotfix tool and ran that. It's not (just now) telling me there is more than an 8mb file to install... that there is a 73.6mb - 892.6mb update available. I tried that. Got the same error. Again.
I am downloading a hard copy of Sp1 and are going to try and install that.

My issues are coming from my system getting caught up, a lot when opening IE. It's the reason I'm trying to get out of running IE8 since that's three iterations ago and lord knows if it's playing nice or not and that's why I am getting issues.

Something specific that is going on is that I will load IE and the top part of a page will load, leaving the meat and potatoes of whatever page I am on, completely blank. This goes for trying to download any of the updates manually, AVG, AdAware, Temp fix and the Hotfix tool. I don't know if there is a bottle neck issue of sorts somewhere on here or what. I have been on and off trying to get my PC at full speed today, wasting an entire day trying to troubleshoot this POS.

I am about to try the SP1 manual install... if I don't hear anything before that's done, or before I fall asleep... I'll post what happens.

Oh yeah... I also downloaded, after the first failed attempt for a clean install, the ISO for Windows 7 that comes with the SP built into it. I downloaded th Windows 7 USB Download tool... it copied fine, but the final product, twice, said, 'cannot make this drive bootable'.

The disk I am using is an ISO image from a few years ago without the SP on it.

I got half way through the manul update and now it's just frozen on about 55%, just sitting there for the last ten minutes. Going to try it again. If that doesn't work - I'm throwing my computer out and starting over. SMDH

Why? Because every attempt I have ever made to adopt Windows 8, has failed. Two laptops, a surface pro and my K450. I have no problem trying to adopt new things, but it was such a PITA, that I didn't feel like it. Ive been following Windows 10 and it looks like they 'figured out' all the $hit they got wrong with Windows 8. I didn't know there were a lot of tweaks you could do - I didn't bother to look because Windows 7 was always easier to use.

I did D/L the ISO from Heidoc, I just can't get it to install the image as a bootable USB drive. I'll try Rufus and see if that works.

And I didn't change anything settings wise, I just installed it over the old system and forgot to wipe it prior to the install until 3 hours into all of this. I'll burn it to disk if I can't get it to boot right via USB.

Suggestions if I get a similar error on the bootload issue?

Wish I would have known.

I just got the Windows DVD download tool to create a bootable DVD. I'll see how this goes and report back in a bit.

Quick question actually.

Did you ask if I had changed any of the bios/boot settings because the K450 came setup one way due to Windows 8 and I am trying to install Windows 7 Pro 64 on this system and due to something being set one way - I am having all these errors?

For a system that has a pretty decent set of hardware, it has never 'performed' admirably - even before all the updates and fixes.

I have Win 7 installed on this system now - all the tools you listed two posts up wont work for me. I did a tertiary search and there are a lot of people with this same system that did the same thing - issue is, I barely follow what UEFI/Secure Boot is. I haven't screwed with or updated a BIOS since DOS... I don't really know much more than what I already divulged. Am I missing something?

I'm sorry you weren't given the forums tutorial for doing a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which has over a million users without a single complaint.

In your case if you've having installation problems then also work through these steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums which resolve 90% of installation problems.

If problems persist please boot into BIOS setup to reset to defaults, look for settings to disable Secure Boot, enable CSM or Legacy. Be sure to boot the installer as a UEFI device and that you've written the flash stick using Option One in UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows

I didn't install (either times) from a boot loader. I couldn't get into the BIOS. I read through a dozen forums on how Lenovos do the fast boot - but I couldn't figure out how to turn that off to give me the boot prompt.

I know F2, F3, F8, F12 all open boot menus on systems... I reset my computer two dozen times and couldn't get it to open. Someone suggested holding down 'B'. That actually opened the memory testing sub system... I ran that, no issues.

The system still seems laggy, specifically when I open internet explorer. Often times, the tabs or my home page take a few moments (longer than any system with my setup should) to open... pages freeze like the system is thinking.

Did the way I installed both of these copies have something to do with it? Not installing from a boot drive, is that the issue?

As per your manual, I actually stumbled across is accidentally before I did the first install... I do 90% of the stuff on there. I had all my files copied to Dropbox, so there isn't anything for me to backup. I use Office 365 and RoboForm so formatting a computer isn't an issue for me... getting it to run like I know it should, THAT is the problem.

I didn't format the computer when I installed it... I didn't even think about it because I wasn't given the option directly. When I tried it the second time, it tells me to 'boot from a disk to format the partitions'. That was the third attempt. At that point, I was tired of working on a computer and wanted to watch Sons of Anarchy.

Does it need a new install? If so, how can I get into the boot manager on this computer to set the way the drives booth. I have a USB bootable drive and DVD, so I have two pieces of medium with the appropriate ISO files burned to them. The only part of all this I don't understand is Legacy vs UEFI and how that affects my install. I have no problem doing it again - just don't want to do it a fourth time. System is in it's most basic form right now with SP1 and AVG installed - that's it.
