I need help in changing the way OneDrive is setup

I'll try to keep this short.

I was having a sync problem between my PC and Onedrive. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issue on my own I turned to Microsoft chat for help. I told them that I wanted to sync a few specific folders from My Docs to Onedrive so I could access them when I am travelling. I gave them remote access and they directed my entire My Documents folder to OneDrive (Barney/OneDrive/MyDocuments).

When I told them that wasn't what I wanted they made a copy of the My Doc folder and set the copy to Barney/My Documents but they left the original My Document folder under OneDrive.

My Documents folder is huge (161 GB) and there are only about 9 folders that are critical for me. While the other folders can't be deleted there hasn't been any activity in most for at least 3 years.

I thought about just deletling folders from the OneDrive/My Doc but I realized that could be problematic since I think there is something wrong with the copy Barney/My Doc.

The original folder is 161 GB with 61,822b files and 4482 folders. The copy has 71 GB with 9292 files and 4493 folders. When I look through the various folders under each version of My Doc they appear to be the same but the differnce shown in properties is glaring. My assumption is that some of the files must be corrupted in the copy.

The biggest issue though is I can barely work on my computer. My upload speed is 1.5 at that rate it will take literally months to sync the data. But it's not the time that's an issue, it's that I can't scheuke when OneDrive syncs so it just continues to run in the background and it's just slowing everything down.

What would be ideal to me:

Move the Original My Doc Folder back to its orinal place
Delete the copy of My Doc
Setup up only those folders I need to sync with OneDrive

Any help on how to accomplish this would be appreciated besides any suggestion to return to Microsoft for help.

Did they actually move the User folder (Documents) to OneDrive folder? Rightclick on Documents under your User name or OneDrive to choose Properties, then on Location tab look at its present location. You can reset it to default there.

Then if you have the OneDrive app installed you should be able to move any file or folder you want into the OneDrive folder (under your User name) and rightclick it from there to Add to Library. This way when you open Documents those files will appear from their OneDrive folder location until you click on the Documents Library Locations to delete it.

Be sure not to leave any copy of the files you move to OneDrive in the original User folder or it will not be sync'd with the latest version. Then folder should remain in OneDrive only until you move it back.

    Greg:
Thanks so much for your reply. Your directions for changing the location of the My Documents folder were very clear and I had no problem moving it back to the default location. Once there I decided I could simply delete the two copies of the My Doc folders made the other day and that I would be good to go. Unfortunately, when I deleted the copies it also deleted the entire folder I had just moved. Somehow they were linked.

I ran a system restore from earlier in the week and got everything back. I am currently running a backup of the original My Doc folder to a second HD on my PC.

Since I don't understand how these folders are linked I think I should delete every single folder labelled My Documents and then restore the backup I'm curently making to the original location. Does that sound right to you?

The second part of your directions on how to move folders I want synced in to OneDrive is exactly what I needed to understand. My only concern is that I can't schedule the uploads to OneDrive and it can really slow the computer down. Is there any way to resolve this?

I've not seen OneDrive slow any PC so maybe you have another problem.

I believe the User Folders - Restore Default Location says to delete all folders by that name first. Be sure to back up the documents first.

I installed the backup and everything is fine with one minor irritation - the restored My Documents folder is as follows - user/barney/my documents/my documents. How can I get rid of the second my documnts without losing all of the folders contained in that folder?

Open the second folder and Organize>Select all, then drag the group to the first Documents folder. Once you're sure they are all there, you can delete the second folder.
