Turn off Automatic Updates in Windows Update settings, Check for Updates, choose only the display driver and install it to see if its the one causing the problem. If not proceed with other Updates in smaller groups so you can zero in on the problem Update.

If Display driver fails then install the Display driver from the Nvidia Support Downloads web page using the auto-detect feature or choosing it manually. The page you provided doesn't refer to any specific driver so it could have the wrong one installed.

Trace the Hardware Identification on the Display device to be sure of the exact Display device make and model.

Yes I am. I am hitting every button on the keyboard possible and it doesn't work. I'm surprised you never heard of the black screen after windows updates. If i google it, i see loads of ppl complaining about this.

The page i provided... the issue with what you are saying here is theres lot of ppl with the same issue. So they can't all have the wrong one installed dont u agree? I had went and installed it and even installed a few drivers last time and each time i did it, it never worked b/c the black screen came.

I just downloaded the update for the nvidia driver only. That doesn't seem to be the issue as i see
NVIDIA GEFORCE 310M there now. So basically i just have 2 exclammation points in device manager.

What date is that display driver? The latest VGA at Notebooks & Ultrabooks - U45Jc - ASUS is from 2011.

Is it stable now with good resolution? Did the black screen go away? I had thought you were describing a long-term problem with the laptop and not just it choking on Updates as it appears.

What other drivers does Windows Update offer under Important or Optional?

If so install the rest of your Updates in smaller groups over the next few days to isolate any problem driver by its group, then break that group down into smaller groups to zero in on the problem driver.

You can make that a background task as you test performance and set up your browsers and desktop.

I will get back to this early tomorrow morning. I will basically just download a few updates at a time to see what is the cause of the black screen.

As for the link you gave me about autodetecting the nvidia... that was the exact link i used to try to update my driver last time. I then downloaded it and when restarted... black screen and i had to system restore each time.

Thank you greg.

Are there two Display drivers installed even after reboot? You should not have both Standard VGA and Nvidia installed, just one or the other. As it explains in the tutorial Standard VGA is only a placeholder driver until it installs your GPU driver.

I just scanned your Manual (you should read) at http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/...Jc_eManual.zip which doesn't indicate switchable or dual graphics chips/card.

Did the black screen go away? I had thought you were describing a long-term problem with the laptop and not just it choking on Updates as it appears.

What other drivers does Windows Update offer under Important or Optional? Install them next, alone.

Install the rest of your Updates in smaller groups over the next few days to isolate any problem driver by its group, then break that group down into smaller groups to zero in on the problem driver.

You can make that a background task as you test performance and set up your browsers and desktop.

The black screen shows up when i do windows update and it installs all those 150 plus updates.

I had a long term problem with my asus laptop connected to a monitor and it would go to sleep many times during the day and i didnt know why. I was told by ppl issue has to do with my laptop and not monitor. I then downloaded the driver update many times earlier this year to try to fix this issue but everytime i installed it, then had to restart, i had black screen so then i had to power off and power on which meant the driver update never worked. Does that make sense?

The link that you gave me to install the vga... i downloaded it then tried to install it. It wouldnt let me and said i needed to install the intel driver first. So i clicked on the intel driver below it then installed it. I then had to restart it.... now computer screen is black yet again.

You should not have both Standard VGA and Nvidia installed, just one or the other.

I always had the nvidia and standard vga i believe even when i first got the laptop.

Right now its back to

standard vga graphics adapter... one that has exclammation point and one that doesn't.

Then have the same 2 other devices with exclamation points

pci simple commucnations controller
unknown deivce.

As for what updates they offer, im just going to type whatever i think might be a driver related besides the first one

Important

nVidia-graphics adapter wddm1.1, graphics adater wddmi.2 233mb

atk input akk011 acpi utility
intel other hardware intel management engine interface
intel corpation display intel hd graphics... theres 2 of them ones thats 19.5 mb other is 28.4mb
update for user-mode driver framework version 1.1

Optional

atheros communciations inc netowrk atheros ar9285 wireless

Next time choose Start Windows Normally instead of Startup Repair to avoid all that.

When did it say to install Intel driver first? I thought you had a stable Nvidia driver installed already?

If it said to install Intel then install all of those Intel drivers first since there's a chipset driver that might be needed too, then the Nvidia.

If you do a hard shutdown of the PC it will refer you to Startup Repair. You dont' have to choose that. You can choose Start Windows Normally and avoid all of that trouble.

I thought you had a stable Nivida driver from Windows Update. Did you try to install the Asus driver on top of it?

What Intel driver did it say you needed to install? You have an Nvidia Display device, correct? Did you trace the Hardware Identification to be sure of the device so you're not installing the wrong driver?

Well i choosed that because that seems to be the safer option as opppose to normal.

I did get the nvidia driver installed from the windows update but that was just installing it only and not checking the others. However, i then installed the nvidia and the other driver below that because you asked me to download it to fix my resolution. I tried to install the vga but it said i needed to install the other one first so i did. Then once i did that it restarted then went to black screen then i had to shut down and power on again and then my nvidia is no longer there.
