Error restoring split image file

I created a image file using Imagex, then used Imagex to split the file into 3.5GB chunks, then burned those to individual DVDs. Now when I try to restore them I get an error:

The specified image file did not contain a resource selection

I have tried both:

imagex /apply f:\image.swm 1 c:

and
imagex /apply f:\image.swm /ref f:\image*.swm c:

Both result in the same error.

How many files did it split into? Maybe the number should be the last file, not the first, as that is where I would expect the index/recombine info to be.

If 4 files were created, then

imagex /apply f:\image.swm 4 c:

perhaps?

Edit: No, that doesn't work.

This tutorial describes how to do it but I'm having trouble following it:

That will work if you want to merge the split image file back into one. I was hoping that there would be a way to restore directly from the DVDs without having to merge them back into one. That would require creating a partition on the hard drive just to hold the individual swm files and then the merged file. Then restore the image, then delete that partition, then reclaim that space to the main parition. Seems like a lot of extra effort.

I figured Microsoft wold have the imaging thing down by now. Ghost and Acronis have done this directly to optical media for years. I Guess it is back to the 3rd party tools.

Seeking an Image Utility allowing backup files to be split into chunks
I was hoping to split up the System Images I am making on my Win7 Home Premium PC into 25GB chunks of files so I can burn them to Bluray discs. But I see the file layout inside a System Image folder puts most of the data in a single file, for me far more than 50GB in size. So I am looking for...
