New HDD Pavilion p6230y no recovery disc install win 7 home failing
Suffered a full HDD crash. Fortunately I had my data all recently backed up on an external drive. So I figured this is a good time to upgrade a little. I got a new 240gb SSD drive. Since the HDD was toast, there is no getting the recovery partition off it. (believe me, I tried) OK, so I figured I'd just download the Win 7 Home ISO and do a fresh install. I know I can still get drivers from the HP website so this SHOULD BE no problem. wrong! I boot from the win 7 home SP1 DVD that I created from the ISO. Answered the Location and language screen. Installation starts and bang, I get a window saying a needed driver is missing. Of course, no indication of what driver is missing, just a browse or cancel option.
OK, so I figure I need to make a driver disc for this HP box. I go online and get the original drivers from HP. But they are all EXE's that start the install when you run them rather than just extracting the drivers to disk. So, I figure these are likely self-extracting archives. Sure enough if I open the .EXE using winrar I see folders. I can extract them and make a disc full of the original drivers. I haven't actually done this yet but it's my next step I guess.
While on HP's support site I notice they have (had) recovery discs available at one time, but no more. I'm wondering if there is something special about this hardware that is going to make win 7 unable to install without getting the specially crated recovery disc for it..
Has anyone out there successfully installed Windows 7 Home on an HP Pavilion p6230y without using recovery discs? If so what is the secret?
Or does anyone have the .iso of the recovery disc for this model that I can get a copy of for my install?
This quad core machine is just too nice to trash simply because I can't get a mystery driver for win 7 to be able to install.
Thanks in advance for any assistance with this.
