You did say in your original post that to downgrade to Win 7 you need to update the BIOS so maybe it is required and will solve the other problems you're having. I have updated many BIOS and so far bricked none so it's not as if it's a total certainty it will happen and as long as you follow the instructions to the letter it should be fine. The cursor problem you're having does it do in in any program or only one or in Windows in general

I think you may be right mate because I cannot get my 4G wifi adaptor to connect and there are four sets of wifi drivers that all give the same message - download the BIOS first

Oh meat to say away from home it is my only connection too.
The fact that they are telling me to download the BIOS for 7 should covr me for warranty?

if it's still under warranty and it tells you to update the BIOS then it will most likely be covered and might be worth ringing the shop where you bought it to make sure. Another way is to ask the shop where you bought it to do it for you and if they want to charge you for it try to talk them out of doing so with the promise of future business. Worked for me with both PC Case Gear and MSY in the past but if no joy then just go ahead and update it just do follow the instructions to the letter

What are the exact specified changes in the newer BIOS version that you need? I would not install it otherwise.

Then work through these same steps for Clean Reinstall Windows 7 to get and keep a perfect install.

Yea I found a new bios 2013 for my machine which is 5 y.o. 2009 and I decided with a three very good suggestion to skip it,

Unless you have a manufacture Utility to do it all for you skip it buddy
The juice isn't worth the squeeze
    Cheers.

Thanks Mike but I just had to get this one fixed as without it I have no net connection away form home which more often than not now I have my new partner and she doesn't have a landline so otherwise I would not be able to use this beast of a laptop.

But I know what you mean

I was reading some stuff you might confirm,
Want is the device supposed to be formatted as,
Seems the device defaults would be more compatible than windows defaults,
Which I believe the device defaults would FAT.. ?

None of these instructions are written in Caveman and that's what they need to be in so a 4 y.o. can understand and follow them :)

I'm one of those folks that used to apply BIOS updates as frequently as I applied driver updates -- without any bad results. Then, one day, I applied an update to my Gigabyte mobo BIOS, and when I restarted, I got error messages about the system memory failing! Fortunately, I had saved off the old BIOS, so I restored that. So the, I ran the BIOS update again -- and again, got the same error messages! I restored the old BIOS a second time, and didn't update again.

Since then, Gigabyte has removed that BIOS version from their website and the latest now, is the "old" version that I restored.

Had I not made a backup of the BIOS, I would have been left with an "electric brick"!

So now, I tell everyone else to make sure they can (1) make a backup of their current BIOS, and (2) have a way to reboot the machine and restore that backup, in the event that the BIOS update goes badly.
