Vista Ult 32 to Win 7 Ult 32 bit Upgrade - BSOD

Hello, I have tried numerous attempts to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. The setup takes some time but does get through the first part where the PC restarts. At this point the Windows setup screen launches and just either sits there, I've lkeft ot for 12 hours before now, or will get a BSOD either stating IRQL less than equal or Process1 initilization failed. When I reboot the PC it will give me a choice to either select Windows setup or Windows Vista. If for instance I choose to boot from the DVD I get an immediate BSOD predominatley the IRQL less than equal screen. Any help would be appreciatted. I'm currentky back on Vista but am having to selct it as there is no option to rollback at the opening screen on starting the computer. Hope you can help. Thank you.

Hi, yes I did actualy spend a good hour searching through the forum for anyone who had any similar issues. I have tried the upgrade both with and without anti-virus installed and also removing my video drivers!

Are you trying to install 32 bit or 64 bit? Have you tried removing all but 2GB of RAM? Have you updated your BIOS to the latest version? Are you trying to install in RAID, SATA, or IDE?

Am trying to install 32 bit upgrade. I've not tried removing RAM as yet. I don't understand fully your question regarding install in RAID, SATA or IDE. Please explain? My main hard drive is an ATA frive according to device manager. I did see something in the bios settings regarding RAID settings?

Welcome to Seven Forums.

The IRQL less than equal error is normally due to RAM errors.

Run memory test, best to run 4 or 5 times.

You can try Memtest86.

Then take out all but one RAM card, try the installation again.
If your getting the same IRQL less than equal error. If you have on board graphics take the graphics card out. If you don't have on board graphics, use an old card or try to borrow one.

Always disconnect all peripherals except monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Is your BIOS the latest version?

Hi Dave, I removed all of my RAM apart from one 2gb and it looks like its going to work. The upgrade has gone the furthest ever so far without problems. All thats left is the Transferring Files, Setting etc part and that is up to 40% at the moment. Fingers crossed it will be OK. What I can't believe is that if I was a normal non techy guy (and I'm not like a number of you guys but know my way around a bit) how these type of glitches would be worked around for the Mr Joe Average consumer! A nightmare for them.

warreng, Glad that it's working so far.

An upgrade installation can take a very long time to process all the programs and files.
I've heard stories of up to 20 hours, so relax and let it sit.

We've seen a lot of non-software errors, and hardware errors.
This RAM issue is kinda strange, most people can just put it back in after the install, a few find that they had bad RAM.

Let us know when it completes.

Most install failures result from a bad dvd burn. If you downloaded the image, i suggest you re dl and re burn.

If your dvd is from MS. try booting into bios and looking for max memory, max cpu, and legacy floppy support. If present they should be unchecked.

Another install problem can be resolved by removing most of the memory leaving only about `1-2 gigs remaining in the computer
