HP Pavilion dv1000 SE Laptop Upgrade to Win 7 from XP w/SP3 ??

HP Pavilion dv1000 Special Edition Laptop
    XP Home v.2002 w/SP3
    Pentium M Processor 1.73 GHz.
    795 Mhz. 0.99GB RAM

I'd like to get this system back to the excellent condition it was in when I purchased it almost 2 years ago. Having briefly returned it to its original owner, it came back loaded with bloatware and, I suspect, malware/viruses.

I can also practice on my own equipment worry-free and experience all of the tutorials and steps that were included to assist with my previous post, which I uncomfortably marked Solved just a moment ago.

I tried unsuccessfully to get a screenshot of the results of the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor for this laptop, but PrtScrn did not put anything onto the Clipboard for pasting into Paint, so I'll summarize the 4 results of the Advisor:

    Win 7 custom install required
current graphics adapter won't support Win 7 (or be supported by Win 7)
    Outlook Express no longer included
HP may be able to provide more info

If it's feasible to perform a clean install, I'd like to try, though first I'd like to run Avira from my thumbdrive and include online ESET and Panda Cloud before anything else. Also SFC?

I was not able to reorder the Boot Order so I could boot from my Avira thumbdrive.

I'm willing to boost the current RAM to its max if it will help installing/running Win 7...I think the max may be 4GB, where now I only have 1GB.

But first and foremost, can I realistically expect this system to be able to run Win 7? If not, I'll go to the next step.

    Thank you!

    Thank you, RAM.

I'm happy to do either, but if I reinstall XP from the original disks, how will I get all of the necessary updates given the O/S's no longer supported?

You still get updates, no longer supported just means Microsoft won`t help you with it anymore.

You can always give 7 a try, you have 30 days before you have to activate it.

You can download a Home Premium SP1 32 bit iso, burn it to dvd and give it a try.

But with a 1.73 GHz cpu don`t expect much.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

    1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

You can run windows 7. But I wouldn't recommend it with less than 2GB Ram.

Restoring your PC to its factory settings will be best in your case.

Be sure to backup your files.

This will wipe everything off your Hdd, and repartition your drive. So doing scans prior does not matter.

HP comes preinstalled with bloatware so maybe you should try a clean install.

Did you run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to confirm your Display adapter won't work with Win7. Perhaps if not it just doesn't have enough RAM if you installed 64 bit OS with only 1 gb RAM?

I'd troubleshoot with certainty this adapter to make sure it won't run even with driver installed in XP Compatibility Mode .

XP isn't being provided with Updates at all so is a security concern at this point. You can run it but I'd have Panda Cloud and MBAM Real Time protection, a System image ready to go if it gets infected beyond repair.

He doesn`t have a 64 bit capable cpu, and who cares about updates, just get the machine running it`s best.

You can also install Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Ubuntu, or Zorin OS 9, all free, and they fly on a low spec machine.

    Greg and AddRAM,

FWIW, the exact system model is dv1580se, and yes, the Windows Upgrade Advisor did confirm that the display adaptor won't work with Windows 7.

Originally I had wiped the system clean with a reformat using the pertinent system CD that came with all the other software in the original laptop bag...it's all there...but I haven't been pleased with the sluggishness of the old XP Home O/S even with SP3 that I downloaded and installed over a day or two. And I did install the free Panda Cloud AV version...quite slow, just like the max supported IE version, IE8, also in molasses. The only browser that "zooms" has been the latest version of Firefox, my least fave browser, with Chrome a distant second.

After running Crucial's RAM app, the max supported is 2GB, so I have two 1GB sticks of Crucial RAM (better than the two 512k sticks I removed yesterday) and a brand-new 12-cell battery on order. Once I've installed the new RAM, I'll purchase another 32-bit System 7 OEM disc at the same store I used for the solved dual-boot issue and I'll be off to the races. To me, Investing a little over $100 for all of the above is better than sitting and yawning and waiting for an OS past its prime to come to life and provide basic online capability in the lalptop.

RE my reformatting once I insert the Win 7 disc-to-be, should I install a partition? I also always wonder if I should install the recommended updates during the initial process...that question is always asked, but in the past I've always chosen "No," figuring I'll perform all the updating when initial install is complete.

I may be going out on a limb trying Win 7 with this older HP laptop, but at least I've seen its same series number, belonging to an in-law, handling it just fine. My only other question right off the top is what do I do when/if I see a black screen when install is complete, because of no support for the XP display adaptor?

    Thank you!

Follow these same steps as for a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 and you will get and keep a perfect install for as long as you stick with the tools and methods given.

    Thank you.

Just curious what the difference is between Crucial's PC2700 DDR 333MHZ 200PIN SODIMM 2.5V CL2.5 Unbuffered Non-ECC Upgrade Memory Module (now that's a long name) and their PC3200? Both are included in the results from running their app on the laptop. How/why would one choose between them?
