Take out old IDE drive, and plug in new SATA drive?

Right now, I have XP Pro on my Sata drive ( D ) and Win 7 rc on an old 80 gig IDE drive ( C ) What I am planning on doing in the future, is to buy a bigger Sata drive and Win 7 Home Premium. Should I be able to just take the old IDE drive out, and plug in a new Sata drive, and install Win 7 on that? I want to keep XP for older apps that are made for the older OS. What I don't want to have to do is reinstall XP, and have to reinstall ALL of my stuff on there, lol.
