    Windows Activation with everything replaced in my pc, including HDD

    Hi all, I'm going to be ordering a massive PC upgrade, this includes;

    -HDD
    -RAM
    -CPU
    -MOBO
    -GPU

    I would say im fairly good with computer hardware. I'm 16 and I love to help everyone with pc hardware, building, fixing ETC. but lets get back on point

    I'm going to be upgrading everything you see here and I have my parts list ready, however, I rally don't want to buy windows 7 again. I have a completely legit windows 7 professional 64bit key which I bought from a friend, and my windows 7 is activated right now.

    now I want to clone my drive to my one that I'm going to buy, so that I can boot my new computer without faffing around with my hard drives. however, there is one problem, I'm not sure about windows activation.
    I have seen on several windows forums that when you replace the mobo or cpu in your PC then windows needs to reactivate itself, but do you need to buy windows again to activate it? please remember this is a totally legit key, not one from the web, I hope I have made this clear, thanks for the help in advance:)

    *SHORT* - Do I need to re-buy windows to activate it, I have a completely legit key.

    It depends on what type of licence you have. Retail, OEM etc. Which type do you have?

    Are you sure you have a KMS key? How did you obtain it?

    Most KMS keys are controlled by an organization subject to an IT Administrator. You'll need to contact that person to reactivate as a KMS key is not an ordinary retail key that would allow easy reactivation after a change or hardware.

    When I said I "bought it from a friend" I meant to put my friend gave it to me. he works in an IT help centre or something.

    I talk to him everyday, so issues about reactivating *shouldn't* be any hassle :)

    After spending all that money on hardware why not just buy a OEM Windows 7 of your choice.
