i can't boot if i do not put the dvd. help!

i installed windows 7 to my laptop. it worked fine. everything is doing great.

however, when i shut it down and restart my laptop. there is a message that "operating system not found". i can't boot it.
i tried to insert the dvd installer, and there it goes, i was able to boot windows 7.
how can i boot windows 7 without the dvd?
is this really the thing with windows 7? does it really need the dvd for it to start up?

    HELP!! thanks!

I had this same problem and it took some time to find out that in my laptop I can install 2 drives. I changed the hard drive from one box to the other and it boots without the DVD.
Please take a look at the back of your laptop and see whether you can chaneg the position of the hard drive.

how do i see if i can change the position of the hard drive? i'm sorry, i'm not really keen about computers. i'm lost.

is my hard drive creating the problem? or just the positioning?

Just look under your laptop and there will be two hard drive icons on the cover. One to the left and one to the right. Use the screwdriver to open the cases.

Try booting from the DVD and performing a Startup Repair. The position of your hard drive should not matter. You do not have a boot loader installed, for whatever reason, and that's what's causing the problems.

BTW, I would not recommend messing with the internals of your computer if you do not know what you are doing.

i did the start-up repair already, two times. still i can't get to boot without the dvd.
the message still appears "operationg system not found.
regarding the boot loader, how do i check if that's installed? so that i know if that's the root of this problem.

You will need to use a more advanced tool in that case. Follow the instruction given in this post.

Have you looked at the drive in Disk Management? Does it show the partition as being primary and active? Do you see any red marks anywhere? Hopefully you installed Win 7 where you thought you should.

    diskmgmt.msc in the search box.

Did your system show 2 hard drives? If so you should be able to change the order in the bios.

i did the diskmanager task, i looked for the partitions, and windows 7 is installed at the right place. there are no red marks. it's working just right.

the boot rebuild, i tried the instructions given, but there i can't fix it, the command to manually make bootrec, i can't do it.
