help with boot issue

Firstly sorry for the title, but I have no idea what is actually going on with my laptop.

I recently (a month ago or so) reinstalled the OS as I was passing the laptop on to a family member. I completed the install and the set up etc but could not find my MS Office licence key so the machine has been sat doing nothing for a while. today upon finding my licence keys I decided to boot up and got this:

I tried to boot from my Windows 7 CD and it showed there to be nothing on the HDD. When I tried to do a fresh install I got this:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.

Test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan to know for sure its condition. It may need to be repaired or replaced.
