Now on to the proper Win7 drivers?
I'd previously downloaded the latest ATI drivers and just installed those. Still had a little messing around to do though... when windows booted it initially had my display as a '2nd display', so I had no toolbar or anything. Right click -> Screen Resolution -> Then under Multiple Displays select Duplicate these Displays.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I have same problem, but nothing I have tried works. I am performing a clean install windows 7 Ultimate x64 on the following:

EVGA nForce 780i Motherboard
Intel Core2 Quad Processor Q6600
Maxtor Raptor X 150GB HHD
EVGA 8800 GTS 640MB Card
4xGB Crucial Ballistix Memory
1000W Power Supply

I know it's quite dated but I have never had a problem with it before. I have attempted a clean install several times now, and each time I get passed the first reboot and towards the end of the install process, I get a black screen with white cursor in the upper left hand corner of my screen. I have rebooted into safe mode, gotten the error, hit shift+F10, typed compmgmt.msc and disabled my graphics card and rebooted. I was able to finish the install process and get into the OS. However, I update my graphics card with the new drivers from Nvidia and restart my computer and now I get stuck on the Starting Windows screen. Please help.

This is what I checked out so far on my computer:

1. Checked Memory
2. Checked HDD
3. Checked All Fans
4. Reset Bios

If you have UEFI BIOS you'll need to follow special steps to install to UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums.

If not try the same steps as here to Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7 ignoring the UEFI steps.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

My motherboard is from 2007, so uefi is not an issue.

Back up your files, unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of marking it Active which overcomes certain install failures.
