cusimar, how is your monitor conected? If you are using DVI, try the D-Sub connector (VGA). This is also a source of headaches in installing. Also, you might need to load drivers for your board at installation, even if it is compatible.

I've just installed XP again and flashed the mobo BIOS... still nothing

I've read about someone else having problems who also had OCZ RAM so I've underclocked mine to 667mhz (should be 800) just in case... still nothing.

I've literally nothing else to try. Looks like Windows 7 has beat me.

Trouble is I've just bought a new laptop, I could try and put Windows 7 on that but if that gets toasted as well I'm gonna scream.

Wallyinnc I did think of that... my gfx card has both VGA and DVI connectors but I've never got the VGA connector to work, only the DVI connector seems to work. It works fine like this with XP, Vista and with the start of the Win 7 install. When the install stops the monitor is still on and I have a cursor which I can move, but the screen is just black.

If I plug the monitor into the VGA connector it just stays on standby.

How do you mean 'load drivers for my board at installation' ? I've tried doing an install with the internet connected, it does seem to install updates but the same thing happens.

Hmm I've just come across this post which seems to suggest problems with the Sapphire range of cards on Windows 7:

Sapphire Radeon HD 2400 PRO AGP

Unfortunately I can't do anything because my problems are half way through the install process

cusimar, you should plug the monitor to the D-sub connector and run the install again. If you remove from teh DVI and plug on the other in the middle it will do that.

Please check this tutorial, item #7 for an example of what I meant with the driver load. It is not the highlighted option showing there (sorry, I don'thave a better picture and I am in XP right now) but the one on the left "Load Driver". You need to have the drivers for your video card in a SUB stick or CD

I can't use the VGA connector at all... if I turn the PC off, plug in the VGA then turn on the monitor doesn't even come on, the power light just flashes. That's why I used the DVI connector in the first place. Maybe my card is faulty but the VGA adapter has never worked. I can't install Win 7 plugged into the VGA adapter or I won't even be able to start the install process!

I see where you mean for the drivers now... isn't this inteded for SCSI drives etc? I'm downloading the latest Catalyst2 drivers, would you recommend I try the install AGAIN and try and load the drivers for the graphics card?

No I don't think you can load drivers during the install process. When you click the link the message says "To install drivers needed to access your hard drive..." so its intended for SCSI or RAID setups...

Well this thread certainly seems interesting:

    Black screen after installation

Apparently its an issue with the display and I have to press all manner of keys during the first boot after installation and jump through several hoops in a pretty dress to have any hope of a resolution.

You should see my computer, its basically in pieces on the floor with ram sticks and manuals all over the place.

Well done Microsoft, you may have finally produced a reasonable OS, but you've cocked up the install process now

If you have access to another monitor, try using it.

If connected to a TV, disconnect, also any TV adapter cards should be removed.

Same with your graphics card, if you have an older one with VGA try with it.

Check you bios for any power saving modes and any feature that controls fan speed by CPU usage.

Check the MSI site for any motherboard driver updates.

Are any of your HDs connected to RAID ports?

Disconnect all peripherals except monitor, keyboard and mouse.

When an installation hangs after the first re-boot to a black screen it's usually monitor, graphics card or RAM.

I'm having the same problem only with a laptop. I boot from the DVD (which I successfully used to install another system), it loads the screen that says Starting Windows and then goes to a black screen with just the cursor. The CD/DVD drive lights and hard drive lights both go out and it just sits there with no more movement.

cp2k, you will need to provide more info. The solution can be as simple as you having to wait, or as complicated as having to change hardware.
Please review this post and also this one. If you can provide the information in advance, great. if not a good start is to fill in your system specs (left lower corner of your post)
