Need to rebuild MBR for SSD System Drive UEFI

    Motherboard: X58A UD3R
Intel SSD 520 Series 120Gb: System Drive
    HD1: Data
    HD2: Data
HD3: Data + MBR partition for SSD (now deleted)

I have a SSD and three normal Hard Drives. I believe that my MBR for my Windows installation was on one of the old hard drives because I erased the partition and now I get the "BOOTMGR is missing" error message on startup.

Now I try to enter Windows recovery utility via bootable USB but the windows installation cannot be located. I tried the bootsect /fixboot /fixmbr and the other one but to no avail. I tried using Partition Wizard to restore MBR to SSD drive but did not help. I did use GPARTED to mark the SSD partition as boot.

I think it may have to do with the SSD being in AHCI or SCSI mode?

Also, I get this message when I try to install Windows:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."

I'm quite confused as to whether my disk is UEFI or not.

    Any suggestions?

Since you have Partition Wizard, boot it with all drives attached and take a picture of the entire drive map showing all columns and scrolling if necessary so we see everything.

Why are you trying to use UEFI tools if you have an MBR which is on legacy installs only? You only have UEFI if a EFI System Partition is present.

With an MBR, you'd unplug all other drives, confirm Win7 or its SYstem Reserved partition is Partition Marked Active then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

With UEFI, you'd confirm there is an EFI System Partition, unplug all drives and run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

    bump, added screenshots of:

    1. DISKPART showing my system partition as active
    2. Windows Repair not seeing any installation to repair
    3-6. BIOS settings
    7. My SSD system drive being detected on boot

How did you get on with Partition Wizard

added screenshots from partition wizard to OP

please note that the unnamed parition on Disk 3 is the one I erased, which I believe contained the MBR for my SSD windows install

The Win7 SSD is marked "Active Boot" which is PW's version of Disk Mgmt "System Active," the flags which tell us that the partition is booting itself and has boot files onboard.

Is it possible the BIOS settings have changed so that the SSD is no longer set first hard drive to boot? Double check that now. Be sure to save settings changes when exiting.

Otherwise unplug all other drives (data cable is fine) to see if it will boot. If not boot into the Win7 installation media or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times no matter what it reports.

If that fails then everything is here for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

I notice that you still have old System Reserved partitions on some of your data drives. If these were not wiped with Diskpart Clean Command then they may still have boot code on them which can interfere later. So if SSD will boot with other drives unplugged but plugging them back in causes no boot, plug in each drive separately (powering down first) to test which is the culprit then move its data off and wipe it of boot code.

Report back all findings as we may need to sort it some more.

    Hi,

I have unplugged all other drives and in any case I am always using F12 to boot.

I ran startup repair 3x but I am still getting BOOTMG IS MISSING when booting from system drive. Note that the windows installation never shows up in Repair your Computer before I click next.

In PW highlight the Disk number then Rebuild MBR from Disk tab. Apply step. Reboot.

As it says in troubleshooting steps doing the Rebuild BCD steps can force install to appear for Repair. That failing you can try to construct a System reserved partition using the last resort step given. But to be most thorough you should complete all other steps in the tutorial. How many have you done?
