Any advantage of having a downloaded copy of the iso?

I have a retail copy of win 7 home premium with service pack one. I'm just wondering if the iso already contains some additional updates which would make the process faster

Thanks
Chad

Hello Chad and welcome to Seven Forums.

The main advantage of using an ISO is that it copies the exact replica of the original file. The ISO includes the data and header information which means the complete data file without any loss. This could come in handy in the future if you think of the ISO file as a "Master Copy" of Windows 7 w/SP1. All you'd have to do is burn the ISO to a DVD to create a new install disk.

One advantage of having the iso is that you can run the ei.cfg removal tool to make a universal iso, that can install all versions (same bit 32 or 64). This comes in handy for reinstalls on other machines, where the owner has a COA but no media.

Windows 7 Universal Installation Disc - Create

Although it's possible to extract the files from a DVD, delete ei.cfg manually and rebuild a bootable iso for burning, it's a lot easier if you have the iso to begin with. BTW SP1 was about 2011 IIRC, so after an install with that disk, there's still about 200 updates to download.

There is no offical place to get a Windows 7 iso from any more. You would have to take your chances with a torrent download.

That only works if you have a retail key. If it's OEM you're out of luck.

Windows Genuine Advantage
I believe earlier this year, there was talk about a Windows Update concerning Windows Genuine Advantage (I tried searching my old posts, but they don't go back that far). I don't see the advantage of running x64
I made a partition and loaded x86 (32 bit) and a x64 (64 bit). While I do understand that most software is not yet optimized for x64, I do not see any performance difference at all between the two. Is there some "secret switch" I'm missing, or what is all this x64 hype about? What am I not...

Take Advantage of Aero
Microsoft has a beautiful thing in Aero, but it isn't using it to the magnitude that it could be. One suggestion, cut out the white backgrounds on windows such as the control panel and windows explorer, and replace them with a glass background. If more than one window is open, make the active...
