Clean Reinstall Fail

I inherited my fathers computer which is running Windows 7 and the hard drive is an absolute mess of nested folders, files and general garbage. I want to do a clean reinstall but when I go to the Microsoft site and enter the product key I get this response:

Unsupported Product
The product key you entered appears to be for software that was pre-installed on a device. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.

Is there some way to download the .iso so I can wipe the drive and reinstall 7?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
The cleanest way is to borrow the exact same version the machine has with a friend...
Otherwise M$ removed digital river not too soon after windows 10 testing started which was the safest place to download windows from.

Thanks for the response and that does seem to be the most direct way to reinstall.

Does it have a recovery partition? If so you could restore to factory state using the recovery partition. Should be a link off the Start menu somewhere or a Fn key you can press at boot time.

This would wipe the drive and put it back to it's factory new state. Not as good as a Clean Install but at least all your father's stuff would be gone.

Hi,
Yep it might help if you post a screen shot of your disk management see if there's a 15gb recovery partition in front of C drive as Ztrucker has pointed out might exist
