I appreciate you all trying to help.

Derek, I thought I should post in EightForums because the result of deleting the Download folder was not what was predicted.

Developments!

I had a good look at the Optional Updates available, and lo and behold!

The dreaded KB3035583 is there and so is Win10, so I left them unticked and rebooted.

Now the Download folder has been restored but it's full of 'junk', not empty like the Win10 poster's was.

Anyway, panic over, at least I needn't worry about Win10 installing itself as long as I never forget to untick those two boxes If I ever come across a way of removing the update I'll post it here.

That's fine, posting over there. If you don't want an update you can right click and select hide.

Thank you, Derek I had been up all night and collapsed before reading your last reply

I hid the update and it greyed it out. Now I have this, which is reassuringly back to normal:

I've got two hard drives on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit system. They are drives C: (a solid-state drive) and drive D: (a 500GB WD standard drive). After 30 minutes, drive D: powers down to save energy. I've only got a few video files on it - I use it as a media drive. I'll be using the...
