    New Installs for Windows 7

I am in my bitch mode for an OLD man.

As far as I can tell this applies to any reinstall of Windows 7 either 32 or 64 bit.

The install itself seems to go smoothly. IT is the after install (which I guess you would call set up).

It has been taking forever to get all the updates needed installed. (I see lots of people here having the same issue) I assume this is a Microsoft issue?? Are they going to fix this??

Even after all the updates are installed, the computer runs really slow. I would have thought this might be a memory problem, but I have run all kinds of memory checks and the memory checks fine. Again I assume this is something caused by Microsoft. Are they going to fix the problem???

Bitch session is over. If anyone can shed some light on these issues I would appreciate it very much.

Nobody here knows what Microsoft is going to do in the future.
At times, I wonder if Microsoft knows what it is going to do.

Try setting your computer not to sleep and leave on all night.

    Is it faster by morning?

What does Microsoft have to do with your PC running slow.

It should take less then 2 hours to do the 200 or so updates on Windows 7

    Put Windows on a SSD.

    Hi,
Are you making a smaller partition to install windows on say 150gb ?
Or are you installing windows on a blank 1tb drive with no partitions ?

All I can say is over the years I have installed this same Windows 7 OS on the same PC and same hard drive and never have I seen it like this.

The PC stays on most of the time and never sleeps. It does not get any better over night.

You want to know how long it took to install 197 updates. It took over two days leaving the PC on constantly. If that is NOT slow I don't know what is.

The OS is being installed on the original hard drive that came with the PC. It is NOT a great big hard drive; just over 100 gb. I always format before doing a new install.

Here is another case in point. A friend of mine brought his note book over and we set it back to factory conditions. Everything I said above happened the same way this note book.

I even went over and talked to a friend of mine that runs a computer repair store and he told me they were having the same issues so I KNOW it is NOT just me.

I can't say much about the time it takes to download and install updates M$ has been messing with it's servers for a while now so it is M$'s deal with that.

All I can ask is what rpm is the original hdd and exactly how old is it
    hdd do not last forever
Some are 7200 rpm and some are 5200 rpm the later are junk to begin with

Hdd's are also pretty darn cheap so depending on how old it is it might be time to get a new
Ssd or not depends on budget but hdd'd really need to be swapped out for newer good brands eventually.

If we only knew why some computers are not having these problems, then maybe we could help those that are.

Some Windows Update servers seem to crawl. Others seem normal.

I wonder how various benchmarks scores would compare on your laptop before and after all of those patches.

First thing to be done on a clean install is to alter the default windows update settings,
Load only Important updates and forget Recommended and Optional ones will help a lot

Windows updates were always very slow, but in my case they typically take 2 hours at most after a clean install (incluiding download, install, rebooting and the like). 2 days I would say is atypical.

The things I would look after for trying to asses it would be a slow internet connection, a slow hard disk, a slow CPU, or maybe overloaded update servers. Perhaps a buggy update is slowing everything down.

Also, be sure to watch out for the updates that are malware-infected by MS. Not that they will slow the thing down, but it's better to prevent those from even entering the system.
Other than that, if installing updates really makes that big impact, you can consider simply skipping them and carry on with whatever you want to do with the computer.

For me it takes all day but that because I have slow high speed connection. Sometimes the updates fail to install and I have to repeat it.
