    Cease using XP and single boot into Windows 7


    I dual boot XP and Win7. It works great, thanks.
    However, I am now at the stage that I wish to cease using XP and single boot into Win7.
    I have the Win7 installation CD in the drive and have set the PC to boot from CD.

    Trouble is the EasyBCD boot manager kicks in and I cannot see how to do a clean install over my XP drive.
    I want to use this particular drive coz it is faster that the other drive.

    How do I set up a single boot please...

    I have not used EasyBCD, so I am guessing, but can't you edit th eboot options in msconfig and eliminate it?
    Although I have trouble to understand why your computer is booting from the HD (where EasyBCD is) rather than the DVD when you set it up for that. have you double checked? Maybe use the F key that selects boot device?

    Unplug the XP drive and either plug cable into WIn7 drive or boot into BIOS and set Win7 as first HDD to boot. Set Win7 installer to boot first.

    Now boot into the Win7 installer Repair My Computer and run Startup Repair 3 times as there are multiple issues including rewriting the MBR to your Win7 drive.

    I'm not sure I understand you.

    Do you currently have 7 and XP on two different partitions on the same drive?

    Or do you have 7 and XP on two different hard drives, and want to put 7 on the drive that currently has XP?

    I say this because you refer to one drive being faster than another.

    If the latter, I would think you could simply disconnect the Win 7 drive and reboot from the DVD and install 7 on the XP drive. Or possibly install Acronis and "clone" the 7 install from disc A to disc B.

    Two physical drives.

    I tried the latter idea before posting this thread. I wouldn't work.
    Nevermind. I am on another avenue of opportunity that looks promising.

    If you want to remove a dual boot on separate HDD's with Win7, you mark the Win7 drive active, unplug the other drive and either plug its cable into Win7 drive or set Win7 drive in BIOS as first booting HDD, boot into the Win7 installer Repair console and run Startup Repair 3 times.

    This will ALWAYS work unless the boot has been derailed to a third drive, which will show itself marked active. If this is the case, then unplug that drive as well when running these operations. Later you can plug that drive back in to delete and format removing the active flag.

    I have found a work around.

    Run EasyBCD 2.0 in the new W7, and use Diagnostic Center->Change the Boot Drive, and point it at the "active" partition on the new HDD. This will cause your new HDD to become able to boot through its own HDD, and you can then disconnect the old HDD.
    It worked. Hooray.

    Glad it worked Anykey.
    But this is actually what Greg had told you to do (except for EasyBCD, his solution didn't involve a third party SW). I don't think you had marked it active before doing it as recommended, did you?
    Anyway, it is working, that is what matters

    Is it possible Easy BCD2.0 is a better option now than Startup Repair to recover/rewrite the boot on dual-boot removal? SIW2, what say you?
