    Compatibility Check - McAfee Problem

I started the Windows 7 upgrade and ran into a snag. When it was doing the compatibility check, I got the following message and could not procede any further.

    -------
The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

For these items, make the following changes:
Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program".
    McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:

These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: Programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade.)
    eSobi v2
Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 *
    -------

I don't even have McAfee on this computer anymore. I origionally ran the McAfee removal tool. I also checked the remove programs and I could not find any reference to McAfee anywhere. I also searched the entire computer and found nothing. What gives?

If you are using an upgrade disc, chose clean install, but do not put in your key number until the process is completed and you have tried it for a while. Make an image of your HD, before you start, in case of problems. Let us know what happens.

I really don't want to lose any of my installed programs as some can't be replaced. If I do a clean install as last resort, what do I use to make an image of the HD. MY HD is partitioned as C:, D:. Will a clean install wipe out both partitions, or will it leave D:?

I still can't understand why the Windows 7 upgrade is finding anything do do with McAfee. The PC origionally had McAfee, but I used the removal tool to get rid of it. My wife has the same exact PC and her Win 7 upgrade went ok.

If you chose to do a clean install, and you boot from the Windows DVD, you will be given the option to format (when you are asked if you want custom or upgrade, you can chose custom and under advanced features given the opportunity to format the drive of your choice).

It appears that somewhere there are still remnants of Mcafee, maybe in a hidden file or in memory. A/V are notorious for leaving bits and pieces behind.

There is a free Image device for trial Acronis and there is the free Macrium Reflect. You can download either, make a copy on an external hard drive. When I suggested that you make a copy, it was just in case something went wrong and you wound up with nothing. You cannot make an image, install W7 and then transfer the image back, in that event you would be back where you started.

As a compromise, make your clean install. Then replace programs only as needed. You may be surprised some you may not even use, and youwill have a cleaner, more efficient computer.

I am giving your my best advice, but there are many here that are more proficient than me. If you really do not want to format, wait a bit, someone else may come along with other ideas.

I agree with Rich that you have remnants of the McAfee bloat infection on your system, and that a clean install is needed to overcome that and other corruption.

The same is true with other bloatware infections common in manufacturers' installations, and the reason why most tech enthusiasts don't even bother trying to remove this bloat but just reinstall a clean copy of the licensed OS.

This is the perfect opportunity to start fresh with a great new OS and leave the corruption resulting from bloat uninstalls behind. If you need any apps or specialized drivers (the installers has most all drivers, followed by Windows Updates with the latest) visit the support download page for your computer model. You can get Adobe flash/reader and Java runtime/free Office from their sites. We can advise you here on others.

In the future, consider Avast free Home AV, which is feather light yet will not let anything in as long as it is turned on. It works perfectly with the built-in Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Windows 7 should recognize and install these automatically.. to be on the safe side though, download the latest drivers and store them on a pen drive in case you need to manually install them..

    Compatibility Check - McAfee Problem

I had the same problem....even though I had uninstalled everything for Mcafee.

I found this program that wipes out any Mcafee residual stuff hanging around http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Once I ran this my upgrade was able to continue.
