clean install question/concern

A new friend offered to help me install Window7 64 bit on my Vista XPS Dell PC.

At one point I left the room for a few minutes. When I returned she told me Vista OS was still on the machine and that Windows 7 was installed. I was could this be? After the install she replaced the RAM to 4GB purchased from Dell.

I cannot see any evidence of Vista, but perhaps it is there. I don't want to
put anything on the PC if there is a problem with the Win7 install.

If I go into computer>C drive>properties> it shows windows folder with 10.4 G.
It shows windows old with 14.7 G in that folder. The only programs I had
on this computer before the Windows 7 install was Microsoft Office and McAfee, and I was prepared to lose them in the clean install.

Should I delete windows old folder? Is there someway I can determine if Vista is on the PC? Or should I just start over?

64-bit Windows 10 Pro

Hello Carol, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It seems like your friend may have meant that everything from Vista was copied into the C:\Windows.old folder in Windows 7 so that you can copy any files that you may want to keep back into Windows 7. If you do not, then you can just delete the Windows.old folder with Disc Cleanup. No need to start over. Any programs that you had will need to be reinstalled again though.

Usually if the drive or partition that Vista was on is not listed in the Computer (Start Menu) window, then it probably is not still there. You can check in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) to see for sure though.

Hope this helps,

Windows 10, Home Clean Install

The advice that you were given is correct and from one of our best. If you want to know how to delete windows.old do not just go and delete. Do it from disc cleanup. Go to the C drive properties and you will see it. Good luck and enjoy.
