Make sure that he has his XP disc/key ready, any data from Vista that he wants backed up, the drivers for his SATA HD on a Disc (This may not be necessary)

First step...do the above
Second Step...boot the XP disc and if it recognizes his HD than you are almost golden
Third Step...Install XP
Fourth Step...Enjoy!

Even though we are a Windows 7 help forum...don't be a stranger and come back to ask questions even if you run XP

Use the XP installer to delete the underlying Vista and format the drive before installing XP.

Boot into the XP installer.

When it shows you the installations currently on the hard drive and asks you what you want to do, delete and format the drive NTFS.

Now XP will install onto that drive. As Zidane says, if it will recognize the drive then it should install.
