Windows 7: Windows7 wont fully install

Windows7 wont fully install

I run XP Pro which boots from a removable caddy IDE drive.
I want to do a clean install of Windows7 on another drive which I can use in the caddy to test the OS.
All is fine until the computer does its first reboot during install, then I just get error message that PCI.sys is missing or corrupt and it tell me to go back to the repair on the install DVD. When I do that, it goes through the motions of repair but just comes up saying that it cant repair and thats as far as I can get.
The install DVD is fine because I have tried the exact same install routine with a removable caddy drive on another computer.
Any suggestions.

Further ...

this is obviously a basic problem with my machine, as I have just tried to install Vista and get exactly the same problem and error messages. I can install Win XP Pro all day with no problem, but it is obviously something in the new types of OS that is causing it to fail.
Anyone know what it might be ??

The problem from the start is using any removable caddy or drive to see Windows Vista or 7 installed there and not on an internal drive. Once you restart to finish the installation the boot configuration is off.

The only successful installs seen to a usb flash drive has been with a Linux distro(ubuntu in particular) to make up a rescue drive out of that for file retrieval or boot file replacement. For anything long term internal drives maintain boot information and can be set as the default boot drive.

It's not 7 that saw the hardware bonding changes but Vista with the new hardware profiling, boot files, and boot manager. I've had both 32bit and 64bit releases of 7 installed in 20minutes as stand alone or dual boot on internal drives here with ease.

cadebusy never replied back since february on how things went there. I can imagine he's all set after all this time. This is a rather old thread to start with here.
