    Launching Windows 7 upgrade option


    Hi guys ,

    Before I do a clean install , I would like to know if there is a way to perform Windows 7 upgrade option (to keep files , programs , settings , users...etc...) without doing it from Windows ?

    I have lost access to Windows 7 (both normal and safe mode) and how I have an empty sky blue screen with no message at all when Windows is supposed to start....

    I have backed up the entire drive on an external drive using Windows 7PE , so no worries....

    I was considering the upgrade option but it wont let me neither from Windows 7PE or from direct boot on Windows Install DVD .... It seems like I have to run the Windows Install setup from the Windows session I want to upgrade..... which is a problem since I can not access my Windows session anymore.....

    So I was wondering if there's a way to force Windows upgrade....

    PS : I have read this tutorial ( Windows.old folder - Restore into a new installation ) but I'm not sure to understand it....

    If I do a clean install as mentionned in step 1, basically I will lose everything that is on the drive...
    So I dont understand how at step 2.8 I can move folders from a Windows.old folder that I am not supposed to have... ?
    I'm confused....

    First of all, you have to consider what took your computer to the situation you mentioned. Is it a hardware or software issue?
    Old Win XP installation disk has the option to do a Win reinstall (reinstalling windows and keeping all other software and settings). I never did, but from what I read, Win 7 installation must be launched from inside windows, and, as you said, you can't do.
    Have you tried booting from Win 7 installation disk and do a startup repair and / or a recovery?

    No
    I'd look into recovering your personal files first and foremost
    Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

    Once that is done I'd test the drive or just out an out buy a new one plus think about upgrading to an ssd = solid state drive if at all possible.

    Clean installing wise
    There are essentially 3 updates needed for a clean install of windows that will get you updated through April of 2016

    KB3020369 & KB3172605 & KB3125574 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer

    When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
    After restart ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and set to manual first or it will conflict with the stand alone installer.

    I also have all 3 of these needed updates on my OneDrive if you don't or can't deal with the catalog
