I was going to suggest that also, but figured he had already checked that too

But what I don`t undeerstand is why he can`t find the offending software, after all he did install it

I agree, i don't understand it.
If i have a problem like this, i look in the registry for some "bogus/ghost" entry that is causing the problem.
That's not something i normally suggest, i understand it's risky editing the registry.
I always make sure i have a system image backup before making changes.

Also, i would ask Lenovo support about this, they may know the answer.
