I found also the install would crash exactly as Foot descibes if I had a USB mouse plugged in my desktop!!! My desktop is a Compaq SR2020NX which has a PS/2 mouse port on the motherboard. Stupid microsoft. Reboot with only the PS/2 mouse and it won't crash.
I'm happy now: I have dual-boot setup with WinXP and Win7 on two separate partitions.

When you are ready to extricate XP from that dual boot:
Use Partition Wizard free bootable disk to mark Win7 active, delete XP, move Win7 over onto deleted XP space, size as desired. Boot into Win7 installer Repair console and run Startup Repair 3 times.

Hope you upgraded your RAM to a gig at least. Otherwise it should be able to run 7 fine.
But always a good idea to run Upgrade advisor since it will spot poss conflicts.
I have been trying to install Win 7 (32-bit) on a 1st-timer new build (post works fine) and keep getting crash right after "Setup is updating registry settings". Installation goes into repair/recovery/etc. Had installation completed several days ago (working at it part-time...), but repeated crashes resulted in trying to do clean re-install. Problems first time as well, seem to have been fixed by installing drivers in repair mode. Have tried same this time w/o success - may not have used same sequence. Would work from setupact.log log file, but don't know how to read and fix results (have looked).
