Thanks to everyone for all your help. I have my laptop humming like a happy kitten. I tried all the advice that was offered and in the end there was only one problem. The dvd would not read the install disks correctly. The player will likely need to be replaced sooner than later. It does read disks but stumbles with the installation disks. The recovery disks work but the new drive size is too small and I tried shrinking and should have worked but didn't. In the end I loaded a downloaded iso image that got windows to loaded. Of course the system wouldn't recognize any of my keys. So I copied my windows install disk to a portable hdd that the ios image was on and over wrote the iso. I entered the key and also entered my original drivers disk and then further updated my drivers. Once again I thank everyone for their contribution as I used all the advice in some manner and I now understand Asus is just about as anal as Microsoft at making things confusing. In the end I used the delete key the esc key and F2 get the job done. Thanks again
