Do you format, when given the choice of chose option Custom, upgrade or advanced?
If not, chose advanced then format. But make sure, very sure that you have a backup of your hard drive. You can use acronis or macrium reflex for the image. See if that works | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell XPS 420 OS Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, clean install, upgrade disc CPU Intel Core2 processsor Q8200(2.33Ghz 1333FSB) Quad Core Tech Motherboard Dell Memory 6 gb Graphics Card ATI Radeon 256MB HD3650 Sound Card Intergrated 7.1 Channel Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell SP2009W 20" Keyboard Dell USB Keyboard Mouse Dell Premium Optical USB Cooling Fan Hard Drives 640 GB Serial ATA Hard drive Internet Speed DSL 2.85 |

On my upgrade disc there is no option to format. it asks which disc drive or partition.
Then starts the uprade
Ideally I want to put it on my 2nd drive (SATA) but I could not do it so I tried on C with same problems. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell DIME521 OS Window XP media Monitor(s) Displays Display, Flat Panel Display, 15 E156FPF, Midnight Gray, Dell Hard Drives C: 80 Gif

This is what I am doing - On the Install Windows page, click Install now.
- On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation, and to help protect your computer against security threats. Your computer will need to be connected to the Internet during Windows 7 installation to get these updates.
- On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms, and then click Next.
- On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.
- Choose the partition containing Windows XP which is C
- Then it starts doing the 'upgrade'

You need to boot from the DVD to get the Custom>Advanced drive tools to delete, create New and Format.
There can be problems running the installer from XP.
You will get a windows.old folder with your XP in it, but you need to back up your files when you do any install anway, so why not boot from the installer and get the cleanest possible install? | My System Specs | | |

Your system is compatable with Windows 7 operating system.
Since you are coming from XP you will need to perform a custom install which will format your hard drive. A reminder to back up all essential files B4 you perform the installation is advised.
Insert your Windows 7 dvd into the drive and reboot and then when asked use the custom installation option and then the installation should begin. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 7600 1 X64 CPU AMD PHENOM II X 550 PROCESSOR 3.1 ghz Motherboard ASUS M4A78-TE Memory Corsair 4 gig ddr 3 Graphics Card ati radeon 3300 Sound Card ati hd Monitor(s) Displays syncmaster 2033sw Screen Resolution 1600X900 60 hz refresh PSU antec_550 watt Case cooler master GLite Cooling stock_heat sink Hard Drives twin_seagates SATA's 1 TB & 500 Gig, hitachi_slimline 160 gig Internet Speed 20mbs up/ 1.5mbs down Other Info favorite child "stewie"
