Windows 7: Canít upgrade from Home to Pro

Canít upgrade from Home to Pro

I initially purchased and installed Home Premium on my machine. I then found an issue due to running files on a work PC that I am connected to with a VPN. So, my network admin sent me our corporate copy of Win 7 Pro to install.
When I try to install it I get stopped during the process and I am told to use the Windows Anytime Upgrade. When I search and run the app it asks me to supply an Anytime Upgrade serial number or go online to buy an Anytime Upgrade. To upgrade to the Pro version itís like $85.
Canít I just run the install and have it install what I need to make it a Pro version without having to do a clean install? How can I upgrade? When I had XP home a long time ago I was able to upgrade to Pro by just installing Pro on top of it.
The serial numbers of the two versions are different because I had originally purchased and did a clean install with the Home version and then I got a new DVD and serial number for my workís Pro version.

Don't know why you can't Upgrade to Pro from Premium version unless you are using some kind of corporate or Enterprise version that requires mass activation. What does it say on the key sticker which should be enclosed with the DVD?

Check with your IT department.

Another choice would be to do a Custom clean install either run from Premium, which will save your files (but not your programs) in a windows.old folder, or booting from the DVD and choosing Custom install to use Advance drive tools to Format the drive for the cleanest possible install.

Win 7 Home Premium

It took me at least a day to get all my apps installed and configured properly. I'm hoping to not have to re-install everything. I just don't understand why I can't just install on top of itself. I did it back in the XP days.

The DVD from the network admin was created by him from an .iso file. Then he sent me the serial number in an email.

Windows 7 Pro X64 SP1

It's not permitted to upgrade-in-place Vista Home Premium to Win7 Pro.

I suppose that this carries over to not allowing Win7 Home Premium to be upgraded-in-place to Pro. I haven't seen this documented anywhere, but it's not the first instance I've seen of the restriction. The Pro key didn't work with the Anytime Upgarde feature.

I belive that you have two choices: Anytime Upgrade, or clean install of Pro.

I think you're right bobkn. Had figured paying the higher price would cover it, but apparently they want an Anytime Upgrade too.

Time to reconsider the clean install?
