Don't upgrade if you are uncertain. Create another partition on your hard disk. Shrink the Vista partition if needed. You need to give yourself about 20 gbs, but more, if you can spare it, for your software.
Give the new partition a distinctive name, so you make no mistakes (WIN7?)
Boot up on your install disk and install 7 in the new partition. It will set up a dual boot, without disturbing your Vista installation, and you can enjoy both.

If you have a restore partion on you pC so you can reinstall a fresh image by hitting F11 during Bootup, be carefull as I lost my ability to use that restore partition. Apparently there is a command line some where in dos that gets erased when installing 7

It happened to me. If you only have a single partition for your OS and you use disks to reload windows, then all you need is to create a 20 gig or more oartition on your existing HD assuming you have the room to spare.
