I desperately need help! Grub 1.5 error code 17

Hi there, I really hope someone can help me. I think I've stuffed things up big time!
I'm trying to install windows 7 home premium on my hubbys laptop.
He had Linux Ubuntu on it, which he wanted wiped.
I tried just installing windows7 over the top of it but it wouldn't work...so silly me thought I'd have a go at wiping it myself! aaargh!!
Now I can't do anything and all I get is the following error...

Grub loading stage 1.5
grub loading please wait...
Error 17

Nothing else comes up at all and I can't boot any disc at all

I've already installed windows7 ultimate on my own computer but I had my pc partitioned with ubuntu and windows and (with some help) was able to install over the top of everything with no problems. Don't know what on earth has gone wrong this time. eeeek

Does anyone pleeeeeeeeze have any 'simple to follow' advice???

Kind regards
Shirley

Hi Zidane and thanks so much for replying so quickly
I know I'm going to sound really stupid here lol but ..how do I go into the bois? Every time I restart the laptop it goes straight into the error..nothing else.
What should I do?

+ 1

Or use the Windows DVD to perform a 'start up repair'

That error is because GRUB is still the 'boot loader' but it no longer points to an existing Ubuntu installation
EDIT:

Depending on your laptop, during the POST (when first switched on) press either ESC, F1 - F12, DEL - accessing the BIOS is different for each BIOS manufacturer

On most machines it should be F2 (but could be delete)...start the laptop and keep pressing F2 immeaditedly...

If you tell us the model we can tell you for sure

I've tried getting the windows installation disk to start but it won't run. All I get is the error message

you should be able to hold down a button on startup (usually f11), bios options will display for a few seconds before booting from first disk.

Hi I am looking at Grub4dos since my recent foray into all things bootloaders. I am gaining a little footing with what I can and can't do (practically!) Although it was definitely trickier than I thought (or I just don't have the same time like I used to... ) Anyhow, I am looking at Grub because...
