Windows 7: The login box does not appear when I press control alt delete

The login box does not appear when I press control alt delete

The nice blue background and the text telling me to "press control alt delete to logon" appears just fine. However, as soon as I press control alt delete, the text goes away, I have the nice blue background, and it just sits there. I can move the mouse around, but the "ease of access" icon in the bottom left is unresponsive. That icon is responsive before I press control alt delete.

I can login in safe mode. Any ideas?

Are you using any logon software for biometric devices , fingerprint readers or anything?

It sounds like you're computer is not having a good day. I'd try taking a look at what services you have running, performing all av / am sweeps, and then seeing if SFC can help you out.

By the way, why do you have to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to logon? Have you changed this setting? If you did so, since you can enter safe mode, go to safe mode and disable this option (needing to press ctrl-alt-delete to logon)

In case anyone else may wonder why he presses ctrl+alt+delete:

Secure Logon - Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on

Dunno why its stopped responding though. A few people (myself included) with logon issues related to 'not responding' have just left it on that screen for a few hours and it miraculously works.

sorry for the bump, just thought it might be informative

WAG: I had a similar problem when my auto login password did not match my actual password. ALT+TAB brought a dialog box to the foreground that had system focus.

So, try ALT+TAB

I had this exact same problem on the General Manager's laptop.

I booted in via safe mode with networking and was able to log in to our domain with my admin account. I did a System Restore Point to about a week ago, rebooted and that let the C-A-D work. Unfortunately, I now had another issue, saying the trust was broken between the laptop and the domain. I then had to remove the computer from the domain and into a workgroup, reboot, log in with the local machine admin password, rejoin it to the domain, reboot and THEN I was able to log in correctly.

Hopefully this all will help someone else in the future.
