    Changing Primary HD


    Hi all,
    i have this problem:
    I had installed Windows 7 on my SATA HD, but when I did Seven found an IDE disk where an old copy of some S.O. where installed too. The result is that my Seven bot disk is the IDE disk even if the S.O. (seven) is installed on the SATA disk.
    Now i have to remove the IDE disk, but if i do so the systen doesn't boot anymore. I tried to use the "repair boot" option on Seven Installation Disk but if the IDE is unplugged Seven doesn't see any S.O. installed. How can i do to solve the problem? There is a way to make the SATA disk as primary and system disk ?

    Hello kersal, Welcome!
    These are some of the easiest problems I deal with, so relax, it will be taken care of.

    I take it you want to remove a drive, but when you do, you can't boot?

    Here's what to do: Unplug the HD that you can boot from/ Follow my instructions in this post for marking a drive as active. Then run Startup Repair 3 times, or until the problem is fixed.

    Hello Jonathan_King,
    thank for your tip, but it doesn't work.
    Now Seven Installation Disk recognize the S.O. and so i did "repair boot" 3 times but the message on boot is now: "Error loading Operating System". If i plug the IDE in the boot run perfectly.
    Any other tips?

    You, somehow need to get the boot information off your IDE drive onto your SATA drive.


    You may be looking at a brand new install. Not definite, but if nothing else works...

    My problem is that i don't want to reinstall because I have to work with PC and re-installing all my stuff is very long!.
    I'm searching some solution like the old win95 solution: copy autoexec.bat and config.sys on the new HD! Now W7 haven't such files but for sure the boot informations are stored somewhere...

    If my memory serves me right, they should be on a 100mb partition on your IDE drive, that should contain your boot information.

    Maybe try get a copy of it and chuck it onto your SATA drive.
    Might just work.

    This is another strange point: W7 had not created the 100mb partition when installed. So i think that it stored all the information on IDE drive in some subfolder... but which sub?

    Hmm, probs not a subfolder, just on the C drive itself.

    Tools> Folder Options > View > Untick Hide protected Operating System Files, and check your C drive, should be there, if it's anywhere.

    The only "strange" files on IDE are:
    a subfolder called: e308ad64f016d11ab5d1c665
    the files:
    bootmgr
    NTDETECT
    ntldr

    LOL, those 3 are the files your after mate hahah.
    NTLDR is the Windows Bootloader, not sure what the other 2 are for, but they are necessary im sure.
