I would switch back to ACHI if that is what you were running in Vista.

In fact, return all BIOS settings to default and retry installation.

Remove a stick of RAM, boot installer to attempt install,

    then switch with other stick.

burn memtest86 to CD and run several passes.

download and burn to CD the DOS version of your HD diagnostics from the Suppport Downloads page for your HD model.

Replug and/or swap out the SATA cables.

Do you have a VISTA installer or recovery disks?

I reset my BIOS settings to default immediately after trying with different settings.

I swapped out the RAM, same deal.

I ran diagnostic tests beforehand, and then I tried with the memtest86. No problems.

    Swapped the SATA cables too.

It seems that I do not have any Vista installation disks. I took all of the CDs that came with it and put them in a drawer immediately. I have disks for all of the preloaded software and all that, and only one CD with "Dell Drivers and Utilities". Not good. My twin sister has the same machine, I'll check with her to see if she has the same disks.

Strange the mind of an obsessive, but I am wondering if Vista SP2 could have run Setup.

You can use any Vista installer; versions are hidden by an ei.cfg file in Sources folder, so by removing that you can recompile ISO using vLite and burn back to DVD.

But first I would try slipstreaming the chipset with SATA controller driver into Win7 files using Vlite, reburn to DVD. Guy did that last month successfully in this same situation.

Here is the basic tutorial, you would just add Drivers: Bootable ISO - Create from Installation Files

I have solved this problem. Some might ask... How?

It so happened that I bought 2 copies of Windows 7 Professional through Penn State's online computer store for my brother and my father for Christmas. It occurred to me that I should pop in the Installation CD and simply plug in the Product key that I got from MSDNAA when prompted. The DVD is simply a media disk with the Product Key on the DVD sleeve... only I already have a Product key of my own.

This is lame. But it works. Thanks for your help greg.

So it must have been the burn?

Really glad you got it working.

Be sure to make a Win Backup image stored in a primary partition and/or externally so you never have to reinstall Win7 again, just reimage using the Win7 DVD Repair console.

You may also have the repair console available using F8 at bootup if you got the 100mb Win7 boot partition.

You might want to make a copy of the install DVD which worked using Imgburn.

Absolutely. While I had a full backup stored on my external HDD, I did not have an image of Vista to restore to. Either way, I got 7 working.

Thanks again for your help. I'm pretty eager to take full advantage of the new additions that come with Windows 7, so I'll definitely be sticking around this site.

Download and install ImgBurn, click Verify Disk, insert ISO to see if it says "bootable" in text at left. Then insert DVD and click Verify button to verify DVD against iSO.

If necessary, reburn DVD at 4x speed with Verify.

You can also try installing from USB flash stick: USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

Try also running extracted ISO from current OS.
