seems to have hung at Regathering Files and Settings stage at 72% (410509 files of 410619 files have been reinstalled)

Friends laptop - Xmas eve ... bugga

Been at this 72% for about an hour.

Give it overnight. In-place upgrades can take days sometimes.

Hope files are backed up, as these can fail.

If you wait long enough it is spose to give you a rollback if it can't complete.

Otherwise, you'll need to boot from the DVD and do a clean install, which is a much better install anyway.

Did you buy the DVD retail?

If so you also paid for MS tech support, which should have rollback fixes for stalled/failed in-place Upgrades.

I only suggest it because I haven't seen these fixes much around here, probably because we're mostly rabid clean installers. Except Kari who knows how to do em right: A simple guide to a successful in-place upgrade

Hi Roddy, Merry Christmas to you and all Australia!

In-place upgrade can be tricky. Read this, check if you've done and prepared everything.

In-place can really take hours. My record at the moment is almost 7 hours. One of the normal reasons why it does not work is that people think nothing is happening and they interrupt the process. As Gregrocker here mentioned, the in-place process can take hours. Here's Microsoft's official estimates of time needed to in-place upgrade various systems:

Is it still hung at 72%?

Maybe it will roll back when it notices it is on battery?
