    DELL win7 Upgrade

    Hi all,

I have my upgrade disk from dell recently as my sis brought a new lappy. But the problem is she is not interested in upgrading. Can i upgrade my other com instead of the dell one? And my com is running win xp. Can i change the OS and upgrade it?

When dell send the disk it comes with a "UPGRADE ASSISTANT" DVD!!!
My com is DIY type, so can i still use it?

    Thanks in advance for answering!

You can't "upgrade" from XP to Windows 7, even with a retail Windows 7 disc. You would have to do a clean install.

At one time, I think Dell upgrade discs were linked to the BIOS of the PC and so would expect to see a particular BIOS on the machine to be upgraded--a Dell BIOS of some type.

I would guess you are out of luck, but no harm in trying. Make sure you can recover. You would also face the activation issue, which might be a problem in this case.

I strongly doubt MS would allow Upgrade Kit keys to be useable on any other than the hardware which it is intended to Upgrade.

They can however be used for formatted clean installs from boot as repeatedly confirmed.

If they aren't able to lock the key to the specific machine in advance since it isn't installed yet and hasn't a hardware signature, then they must have locked it to the Vista key somehow.

If not and it's an OEM key that activates on any hardware it will then be locked to that hardware for life.

If it is retail Upgrade version, then it's quite a giveaway since it can migrate for life.

I requested a disc from Dell for my laptop, but ended up using it to install Win7 on the computer that I built. Worked like a charm. I did a clean install, though.
You only need the DVD that has the operating system on it. Install it like you would install any other copy of Windows.

All Win7 installers can install, but did the key activate when you inserted it on different hardware?

Check the activation status at Computer>Downloads, scroll down.
