Windows 7: Win 7 64x doesnt load at boot

Hey Folks,

So my Win 7 7000 64x doesnt offer me the "press any key to load CD or DVD..." I have tried it on other laptops and it works. So it cant be the DVD. Im guessing its an issue with my lappy. Im running Win 7022 right now, 32 bit obviously. I have never tried to install 64 bit so I cant say whether or not my laptop can support it, though its Merom which technically should.

Laptop: Sony cr120e, Intel T7200, 4gb ram (upgraded from 2gb), bios R0231Q0

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hello Daimler and welcome to Seven Forums.

You need to change the boot order , by entering your laptop's BIOS and setting the first boot device to be your DVDROM, not your Hard Disk.

Alternatively, some laptops have a bios option that displays a message during bootup to press some key for boot menu/boot options. You could that from there too if you can't enter your bios.

Thank you for the welcome! I realized I didn't include enough information in the first post, but that feature definitely is set. Im using Win 7 right now installed via the DVD drive. It is totally unexpected, because my lappy recognizes every Win DVD boot install I throw at it from XP to Win 7, 32 bit mind you. Since 64 bit was free to download I dowloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit. The 32 bit installation was seamless; the 64 bit was not. That feature just doesnt show during boot when the 64 bit DVD is in - it kind of hangs and then goes straight to my current OS, never giving me the option (almost as if the DVD was not inserted).

So I thought the 64 bit DVD is where the problem is, but it installs on two laptops I tried, neither being a Sony however. So it cant be the DVD...

I emailed and chatted with Sony, my lappy should be able to run 64 bit, however they dont recommend it.

I cant say I know what to do... In light of this new information, any suggestions, pls?

ok then, if that particular DVD boots in other systems, and your laptop does boot other bootable CDS/DVDs, then I can only assume 2 things to be the reason:

1. Your DVD disc's format/brand is not supported by your laptop's DVD drive. (Yes, some drives don't like certain DVD disc brands, you might want to consider copying to a different brand or format (DVD+R / DVD-R)

2. Your laptop's hardware has a problem with the Windows 7 64bit DVD.
However, it should at least start and give you an error later saying that "you're trying to run an 64bit system on a 32bit machine". Since you're not getting this error but you just can't even see a boot/startup screen, it's probably case 1 above.

I suggest you try and install from a USB stick and see what happens.

Alright, so, for some reason, both 7000x64 and 7048x64 have isssues initially booting with my lappy.

When the DVD is inserted, I would have to randomly press a series of buttons that would coax the DVD to give me the option of "press and button..." sometimes this would work, but mostly no.

Only once did it give me the option without me having to randomly press buttons to coax it, out of at least 20 tries.

So, I went into the bios and only let it boot from the DVD - no HD option. It initially gave me a problem ("no OS detected") but then immediately detected the DVD properly, and it was smooth from there on.

Thanks limneos for the help. The USB key worked flawlessly, so it has to be a compatibility issue that Sony laptops have between bios, hardware, and software used. From now on, Im only doing this with USB keys.

So this issue is fixed.
