Windows 7: New Hdd with win 7 on

31 Dec 2009   #11

XP (going on 7)

I got my win 7 pro version from microsofts msdn:aa programme so I have the installer and legal license key on my external hdd.

What I wanted to know was whether I could repair ultimate on my new hdd using the pro installer. Too late anyway as I've already reformatted and installed xp, now it wants sp2 before I can run the win 7 installer.

Thanks for your help everyone

As was mentioned much earlier, You do not need to have XP on the machine to use Upgrade version:

This workaround is approved by MS. You only need to have the XP/Vista on hand and not use it again after Upgrade.

You get the cleanest install anyway by booting from the installer to use Custom>Drive OPtions to format the HD first.

Is your installer bootable? You will need a bootable installer for the Repair console.

As I also mentioned earlier all of the installers are the same (with versions hidden) including the repair console.
